Woman, son arrested
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested a Spearman Avenue woman and one of her sons in connection with injuries suffered by the woman's younger son.
Police said the younger son, 13, apparently misbehaved May 27 and his mother, Mary Allah, 41, instructed her older son, Sharife Martino, 22, of the same address, to discipline the boy. The boy suffered a broken wrist while being disciplined, police said.
A school nurse noted the injury the next day and called Allah to tell her that her son needed medical treatment. Allah refused to provide that treatment and Thursday, police arrested her and Martino.
Allah was arraigned Friday on charges of criminal solicitation and endangering the welfare of a child and freed on her own recognizance.
Martino, who was already in jail on drug charges, was also arraigned Friday on charges of aggravated and simple assault and ordered held in jail on $25,000 bond. He remained in jail today.
Police said Allah's younger son is staying in a temporary home.
Prime Outlets burglary
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- State police said someone broke into the Sunglass World store at Prime Outlets in Springfield Township and stole 45 pairs of Oakley sunglasses with a retail value of $4,320. The burglary occurred between 9:15 p.m. Friday and 6:15 a.m. Saturday.
Youths plan carnival
MERCER, Pa. --The youths of Mercer Free Methodist Church will have a summer carnival from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the back yard of the church, at 519 Grant St.
The fair will feature games and refreshments, and proceeds will benefit various local charities, including Alternatives for Women and leukemia research. The youths also be accepting donations of clothing for babies and school-age children, disposable diapers, children's books, blankets, baby lotions and shampoo and small gifts for new mothers.
Those items are destined for a Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona and the Pro-Life Education Alliance.
Public zoning hearing
BROOKFIELD -- The township zoning commission will conduct a public hearing on a proposed zoning resolution at 7 p.m. June 26 in the township administration building, 6844 Strimbu Drive.
Text and a map of the proposal can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Township trustees want to place a zoning issue on the ballot.
Mahoning Ave. work
YOUNGSTOWN -- Work was to start today that will close one block of Mahoning Avenue for about 90 days, between Oak Hill Avenue and Hogue Street downtown.
Drivers will be directed around the project using Marshall Street, Hogue and Oak Hill. Drivers should expect delays near the project and leave extra travel time during the morning and evening commutes, the city public works department said.
A new bridge to carry train traffic over the Mahoning River is being built.
Man pinned by car dies
LAKE CITY, Pa. (AP) -- An Erie County man died after he was pinned by a car while trying to push it into a garage.
Ryan James Luther, 22, of Lake City, died early Saturday morning at Saint Vincent Health Center about an hour after he was pinned by the car.
Luther and three friends were pushing a 1992 Dodge Shadow into Luther's garage around 2 a.m. when Luther tried to stop the car by jumping in front of it. He was pinned between the car and a workbench in the garage.
Fatal head-on crash
BUTLER, Pa. (AP) -- A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed, and three people were injured, in a head-on collision on Route 8.
State police said Kelly A. Lopez, 21, of Butler, was driving south on the highway when she turned into the left turn lane and hit another car head on. Lopez and her unborn child died in the crash, which was reported about 4:45 p.m. Saturday.
The driver of the other car, Shannon R. Crawford, 17, and a passenger, Nicole Clauser, 17, both of Chicora, were treated at Pittsburgh hospitals.
A passenger in Lopez's car, Kristine Stankowitz, 17, of Butler, was also treated at a Pittsburgh hospital.
