Placement denied for Jackie Colon
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jackie Colon, 14, who police said stabbed a 3-month-old boy to death last December at her Roxbury Avenue home, will not be going to a mental facility in Indiana, her mother said. Michele Colon said she learned Monday that the plan fell through and she doesn't understand why.
She said her daughter has been in the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center since her arrest Dec. 18 and, while there, has gone from 98 to 164 pounds. Colon said the juvenile center is not a place for the type of mental care her daughter needs. "This is a child who did a terrible horrendous thing, but she's so sick, so sick," Colon said. "She needs lifetime care and I cannot afford it."
James Lowe II, JJC detention director, said placement was denied and the court is trying to get it reinstated. Until then, the court will provide as many services as possible. He did not say why it was denied.
Ex-juvenile officer getsnew sentencing date
YOUNGSTOWN -- A former Mahoning County juvenile probation officer's sentencing date for selling the party drug Ecstasy was delayed from Wednesday to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 3 before Judge Maureen A. Cronin. Joseph Maderitz, 32, of North Hazelwood Avenue, pleaded guilty in May in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to two counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs. He faces 18 months to 6 1/2 years in prison, or could be placed on probation.
Maderitz had worked for the county nearly six years before being indicted in August 2000 after a six-week police investigation. Authorities alleged that Maderitz sold Ecstasy to an undercover agent twice, including once in the parking lot of the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center, where Maderitz was working at the time.
Hearing set for dancers
YOUNGSTOWN -- A second pretrial hearing for four exotic dancers arrested during an undercover sting by vice cops at da-Bing, 2619 Market St., has been set for Aug. 27 in municipal court.
At a pretrial hearing Wednesday, attorney David Engler and city Prosecutor Dionne Almasy exchanged evidence, then asked that Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly schedule another hearing.
Da-Bing was raided June 29, and police arrested the owner, manager and five dancers. Charges range from prostitution and public indecency to promoting prostitution and improper conduct in a burlesque theater.
Glenellen yard sale
NORTH LIMA -- The residents of Glenellen Assisted Living, 9661 Market St., are having a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday, offering furniture, appliances, clothing and gift items for purchase.
Proceeds go to the Resident Council Fund, which provides donations to charities and resident activities.
Park consultants hired
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's park and recreation commission hired Engineering Services and Consultants Inc. of Youngstown today for $13,975 to handle the design and engineering phases of a $173,000 improvement project to city parks. ES & amp;C submitted the lowest proposal for the job, beating two other companies.
The work includes replacing roofs at three park buildings, installing fencing at Schenley Park, building a baseball field at Kirkmere Park and improving a soccer field at the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District Park. The work will be done this summer.
Board to buy land
CANFIELD -- The board of education voted to pay $430,000 for 27 acres on the outskirts of the city of Canfield.
The land is near the corner of Shields Road and state Route 46. Canfield Superintendent Douglas Hiscox said the board has no immediate plans for the land. He said, however, the district may need the land for expansion in the future.
The board also has voted to hire Ron Infante as the principal for grades 5-8 at Canfield Village Middle School. He'll be paid $62,488 a year. Infante previously served as the principal for grades 5-6 at the school.
The principal for grades 7-8 resigned last year to take a position in the Western Reserve School District.
