Conflict over shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police have been given conflicting reports in a shooting.
A Kendis Circle woman told police a man shot at the car she was riding in with her 4-month-old daughter and 3-year-old son in the back seat. The man she accused said the woman's boyfriend was responsible.
The woman said her boyfriend was involved in a dispute with two brothers at 10:50 p.m. Friday on Breaden Street. Both brothers were carrying handguns, the woman said.
When the brothers wouldn't put down their guns, the woman and her boyfriend drove away and one brother fired five shots at their car, the woman said.
One of the brothers told police they weren't sure who started the shooting. He said the boyfriend later pulled up and began shooting at them.
Woman beaten with bat
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 31-year-old woman was treated at St. Elizabeth's Health Center Friday afternoon after she was beaten with a baseball bat.
The woman told police she was walking on Shehy Street near Pearl Street at 12:45 p.m. Friday when a blue car pulled up and someone addressed her as "Linda."
When the woman, whose name is not Linda, kept walking, one of two people in the car got out and beat her, breaking the wooden bat.
Work at practice field
GIRARD -- Construction of an all-purpose practice field in Liberty Park is progressing. Mayor James Melfi said the field is a joint venture of the city and board of education.
The football field-size facility adjacent to the Pony League baseball field will be used for football, marching band and soccer practices.
The work is being done by the city street department and school district's building and grounds staff.
Lafarge Construction Materials of McDonald is donating the heavy equipment.
Grass will be planted in the fall and the field will be ready next year.
Melfi pointed out the field is being built even though the city is having financial problems, noting volunteers are needed to complete the project.
Fund-raiser for food
COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State Bar Association is trying to raise $25,000 and collect 2,500 pounds of food for nine impoverished southeast Ohio counties.
The donations will be channeled through the Southeastern Ohio Regional Food Center.
The food bank can purchase $5 in food for $1 because of government subsidies, so the $25,000 would buy $125,000 in food.

Family Night at YMCA
NILES -- Trumbull County YMCA will have its first Family Night from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eastwood Family YMCA.
Take lawn chairs, flotation devices, rafts and inner tubes to watch the movie "Free Willy" at the pool.
Cost is $5 per family. Refreshments will be served. Reservations can be made at the Warren or Eastwood YMCA.
