Arrested in break-ins
MILTON TOWNSHIP -- Police have arrested a North Jackson teen and accused him of participating in three break-ins here. Juan Rosario, 18, of Gladstone Road, was arraigned Thursday on three felony counts of breaking and entering, a felony count of complicity to breaking and entering, a felony count of grand theft, a misdemeanor count of theft and a misdemeanor count of failure to appear on a subpoena. Police said they subpoenaed Rosario to question him about recent break-ins at a barbershop, a home and a car dealership in Milton Township. He failed to appear for questioning, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Molotov cocktails found
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Molotov cocktails -- 12-ounce beer bottles filled with gasoline with rags for a fuse -- were found Thursday night at a house in the 1400 block of Lansdowne Boulevard. The residents heard breaking glass in the driveway, then found that one of the incendiary devices had been thrown at a 2000 Oldsmobile. The second landed in weeds near the car. No fires resulted, but the car's windshield was shattered and there were dents and scratches in the hood and right fender, reports show. Police have a suspect in mind.
LTV break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- A tire iron was probably used to break a window at LTV Steel Co., tubular division, 1315 Albert St., around 2:10 a.m. today, police said. Police spread out around the building but found no suspect. Nothing appeared to be missing, but police saw that in one room a computer monitor and printer had been dropped on the floor.
Bond set for suspect
YOUNGSTOWN -- After a break-in at the Unique Lingerie and Biker Apparel Shop at 1689 Mahoning Ave., police found Michael Watson hiding under a stairwell in the basement, beneath a pile of wood. Watson, 36, who lives near the shop, has been charged with breaking and entering. At arraignment Thursday in municipal court, his bond was set at $3,000 cash or surety.
Police, who arrested Watson at 5 a.m. Wednesday, said they found the shop's front window broken out and a section of its metal bar cut. Merchandise taken from the rear of the store had been piled up near the front window. A car with bolt cutters inside was found parked in front of the business. Two men who reported the crime said they saw a man break the window, and the man, seeing them, called out, "Police, get out of here," as he entered the building.
Drag racing in Canfield
CANFIELD -- There was drag racing Thursday night in a desolate section of the Villa Rosa housing development off Tippecanoe Road, near Tippecanoe Country Club. A Mahoning County deputy sheriff who spotted the race cited the participants. The dragsters, a 16-year-old boy from Tyler Drive in Canfield and a 17-year-old boy from Cherokee Drive in Youngstown, will have to appear in juvenile court. The Canfield driver had a 2000 Pontiac and the Youngstown driver had a 1998 Chevrolet.
Summonses issued
AUSTINTOWN -- Two Youngstown women were issued summonses early Friday after a fight in the parking lot of The Mill nightclub, 1743 S. Raccoon Road. One woman, of Liberty Road, is 20; the other, of Edgar Avenue, is 21. Police reports contained little information, but one says the women engaged in "mutual combat;" another says there was a "physical confrontation." The women were ordered to appear Monday in Mahoning County Court in Austintown on charges that they "did recklessly cause inconvenience, annoyance or alarm to another by engaging in fighting."
Work on I-79, I-80
MERCER, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is installing raised pavement markers on sections of Interstate Routes 79 and 80 next week and has warned the work could slow traffic. Raised pavement markers are installed on the center line of the road and serve as reflectors to aid drivers' vision at night.
The markers will be installed in both the east- and westbound lanes of I-80 between Mercer and the Ohio line and from the Venango County line to Clintonville. Only the northbound lanes of I-79 between I-80 and U.S. Route 62 will be affected.
$10 for round in ring
BAZETTA -- Former Golden Gloves boxing champ Rusty Rosenberger of Niles will take on all comers under the tent in the Trumbull County Fair's Historical Village starting at 6 tonight.
Contenders can pay $10 for a round in the ring with Rosenberger, who also was New Jersey's middleweight champ. Only blows to the upper body -- but not the head -- will be permitted. The event is a fund-raiser for Junior Fair and 4-H programs.
