Ursuline girls rally to top Chanel 70-63



YOUNGSTOWN --Trailing by 16 points after three quarters, Ursuline looked itself in the eye, took stock of its predicament, then went to work, out-scoring Bedford Chanel in the fourth quarter en route to a 70-63 girls basketball victory.
The win was the second straight for Ursuline (6-2), which beat Canfield last Thursday after losing to Boardman. It was also the first meeting between the schools in basketball. Ursuline out-scored Chanel (5-3) in the fourth, 36-13. Ursuline's fourth-quarter points topped the 34 it produced in the first three periods combined.
Taking the attitude that they should relax because they had nothing to lose, Courtney Davidson poured in 18 points in the final eight minutes, while Christina Cook scored 17. Davidson, a sophomore guard, finished with a game-high 31 points, while Cook, a 5-10 junior forward, tallied 28. Cook was 10 of 16 at the foul line, including her last six in a row.
Mahogani Graves was also in double figures for the Irish with 11.
Cook and Davidson grabbed 10 rebounds apiece, while senior Meghan Marenkovic secured eight caroms for Ursuline, which had a 40-32 edge on the boards. Lisa Piechowski's 21 points paced the Firebirds.
Canton McKinley 78, Warren Harding 42: CANTON -- The Raiders (3-4) fell behind 39-18 at halftime and never recovered against Canton McKinley (7-2). Desirae Jenkins scored nine points and Leigh Carlson added eight for Warren Harding.
Niles 36, Lakeview 35: NILES -- Stacia Ray scored nine points and had six steals and Amanda Furey scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Niles past Lakeview.
The Red Dragons (4-6) held a 26-20 lead at the end of three quarters. Amanda Monroe scored six of her game-high 14 points in the fourth period for Lakeview (2-7).
Mooney 69, Maplewood 39: YOUNGSTOWN -- Aieshya Dixon had a double-double -- 17 points and 14 rebounds -- for the Cardinals (6-3) who have won three in a row. Lori Patrone also had 15 points, seven assists and seven steals for the Cards while Karla Fedina scored 11 points and Megan Maloney had 10 more. Krista Finch led the Rockets (5-4) with 18 points while Christen Clemson scored 11 points and rebounded 12 times.
