hPest-infested garden?Throw the book at them
Gardening isn't always pretty.
Japanese beetles chew the rose petals. Powdery mildew shrivels the monarda. Wild mustard pops up in the petunias.
Trouble is, you need to identify the problems before you can eradicate them. That's where "Insect, Disease & amp; Weed I.D. Guide" comes in.
The book, published in 1988 and newly updated, contains descriptions and either photos or drawings of a host of garden pests. Identification guides at the beginning of each section help readers narrow down the possibilities in their gardens.
The current version of the book contains new organic control methods and information on pests that have arrived since the book was first published.
"Insect, Disease & amp; Weed I.D. Guide" is edited by Jill Jesiolowski Cebenko and Deborah L. Martin. It is published by Rodale Books and is priced at $24.95.
Ornaments helpraise adoption funds
Ornament maker Christopher Radko has come out with the second in a series of limited-edition ornaments to raise money for the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.
The "Celebrate Adoption 2001" ornament is a two-sided design that can be displayed year-round. One side shows a blooming landscape and the other, a snowy winter scene.
Like all of Radko's pieces, the ornament is mouth-blown in tempered glass, lined with sterling silver and hand-painted.
The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption was established in 1992 by the founder of Wendy's restaurants. Its mission is to create awareness about children awaiting adoption, educate prospective adoptive parents and streamline the adoption process.
The ornament is priced at $38 and is available only from Federated Department Stores. It may be ordered online at www.macys.com or by phone at (800) 431-9644.
