YOUNGSTOWN -- SherryLin M. Peck, 16, daughter of Clifford and Linda Schell-Peck of Youngstown, has been named an ambassador to Europe through People to People, a program founded by President Eisenhower.
SherryLin, who is home-schooled, will travel in July to seven countries in 21 days. She currently holds the title of Miss Junior America 2001 and 2002.
Sebring teacherhonored at Miami U.
OXFORD, Ohio -- JoAnn Jones, an English and German teacher at Sebring McKinley High School, was named an Outstanding High School Teacher at a banquet conducted by Miami University's School of Engineering and Applied Science. She was nominated for Scott Patterson, a former student who now is a junior paper science and engineering major at Miami.
OSU program citeshonor students
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Chapter of the Ohio State University's Young Scholars Program presented trophies and achievement certificates to the following students for achieving a grade average of 4.0 or above: Brittany Jackson of Cardinal Mooney High School; Natasha Clemons, Natasha Cox and Kenyatta Robinson of The Rayen School; Keith Coleman of Ursuline High School; and Edgardo Cortes, Ryan Kemp and Aniequa Maiden of Woodrow Wilson High School. The awards were given at a ceremony in November at Choffin Career and Technical Center.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Michael T. Heher, general manager of allied waste at Browning Ferris Industries, has been elected president of the Industrial Information Institute for Education Inc. He succeeds Herman A. Maass. Heher is past chairman of the Mahoning County Chapter of the American Red Cross and also was the institute's president from 1998 to 2000. Elected vice presidents were Victor W. Nery, president of Columbiana Foundry Co.; Timothy T. Bresnahan, controller of Hynes Industries Inc.; Philip J. Marrie Jr., president of National City Bank of Pennsylvania; Patrick P. O'Connor, treasurer of Packer, Thomas & amp; Co.
The institute, founded in 1947, provides economic education, career development and science education programs for teachers and pupils in Columbiana, Mahoning, Trumbull and Mercer counties.
SRU dean willconvene forum
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Dr. Jay Hertzog, dean of Slippery Rock University's education college, has been elected to a third, one-year term as the convener of the Pennsylvania Deans of Education Forum. The forum examines policies and legislation at the state and national levels that affect teacher preparation curriculum.
"Being chosen to represent my peers at this time when issues of education are on the front burner brings with it numerous challenges," Hertzog said. "I continue to look forward to those challenges."
Girard senior nominatedfor leadership award
GIRARD -- Girard High School senior Adam Hanley has been nominated for the Morehead Award given by the John Motley Morehead Foundation. The award for gifted student leaders is a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Students outside North Carolina are nominated by invitation only. Hanley, son of Robert and Patricia Hanley of Girard, applied last year, was invited to North Carolina and participated in three interviews. He is senior class president, student council vice president and band president.
Army veteran to speakat KSU commencement
CHAMPION -- Kent State University Trumbull Campus will have commencement at 7 p.m. Friday in Lecture Hall A. John Marino, associate professor of business management at Kent Trumbull, will speak. Marino is the campus' business program coordinator. A retired lieutenant colonel, Marino served in the Army during the Vietnam and Persian Gulf wars. In 1996, he received the Outstanding Faculty Service Award from the Trumbull Campus Advisory Board.
