Remains missing
WARREN -- The city of Niles must get permission from five families before opening crypts in the city-owned Union Cemetery to look for the cremated remains of Jody Mays.
That was the decision made Thursday during a hearing in the chambers of Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
The ashes were found to be missing in 1998 when Jody's mother, Betty Mays, asked the cemetery to ship them to her new home in Texas. The crypt was opened and a cemetery worker found a coffin with a skeleton.
Niles filed a motion earlier this summer to open the five crypts, hoping to rule out the possibility Mays' remains were misplaced after a tornado seriously damaged the cemetery in 1985.
Mays was 17 when he died accidentally in October 1976 in Spain, where his family lived at the time.
Really bugged
WARREN -- Two city police officers came to each other's aid earlier this week after leaving a house with more than they had bargained for.
Officers Eric Merkel and Chris O'Rourke went to a home at Vermont Avenue and West Market Street on Wednesday, hoping to serve a warrant on a man suspected in several robberies.
He wasn't there, but the officers searched the house and walked away covered in fleas.
The two noticed they were infested as they left in their cruiser. They helped each other brush off the bugs, which, they said, were all over their arms and clothes.
Merkel and O'Rourke had to throw away some of their clothes, and they thoroughly cleaned and disinfected their cruiser.
Trumbull County Children Services was notified because a teen-ager lives in the home.
Fatal car wreck
LIBERTY -- A Youngstown woman was killed and her sister remained in critical condition this morning at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after a one-car accident.
The Ohio Highway Patrol's Warren Post said Adrienne Armour, 32, of Scioto Avenue, was killed in the accident about 2:30 a.m. on state Route 11 near Tibbetts-Wick Road.
April D. Armour, 28, also of Scioto Avenue, is in St. Elizabeth's. The patrol hasn't identified which woman was driving.
Their vehicle was traveling south on Route 11, went off the right side of road and then entered the median, turned around and rolled over several times, and ended up facing northbound on Route 11.
Both women were ejected from the vehicle. The patrol is investigating.
Howland recycling
HOWLAND -- The Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste District has moved its second Howland recycling drop-off bin.
The container formerly at township fire station No. 32 on Wilson Avenue is now at Bolindale fire station No. 31 at 3403 Ridge Road. The district previously moved its other Howland bin from the township building to the football complex. Both sites are open during daylight hours, seven days a week.
Study approved
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners have approved a $23,000 feasibility study to help them decide what to do with the county engineer's offices and garage on Warren-Meadville Road in Cortland.
The complex, about eight miles from the engineer's headquarters on North River Road, is used primarily for its workshops and garage space, said Rocky Riviella, department comptroller.
Officials have been considering consolidating the two buildings since the North River Road headquarters was completed in the late 1970s, Riviella said.
The department is thinking about vacating the Cortland building again now because it is in need of repairs, including new boilers, he said.
The study is being conducted by FPS Architects and Engineers of Cleveland.
Church ransacked
WARREN -- First Church of the Nazarene on Parkman Road N.W. was broken into earlier this week. A woman told police Thursday the church was ransacked, causing some damage to areas inside. Church officials were unsure what was taken.
Smoking caused fire
WARREN -- Careless smoking is said to be the cause of a house fire at 1258 Main Ave. S.W. early today. No injuries were reported.
Fire officials say the house is owned by John Fulmar, and that there were people home at the time. The fire started in an upstairs bedroom around 3 a.m. The upstairs and downstairs were damaged, but officials have not estimated losses.
