SALEM -- Authorities are investigating a traffic accident involving a Salem school bus and a pickup truck. No injuries were reported.
A total of five middle school and high school pupils were on the bus when the accident happened shortly after 7 a.m. today, schools Superintendent Dr. David Brobeck said. The accident occurred on state Route 14 near Benton Road, northwest of Salem.
It is being investigated by the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Canfield Post.
Option, candidatewon't make the ballot
LISBON -- A liquor option and a school board candidate failed to receive the Columbiana County elections board's authorization to be placed on the November election ballot.
The panel decided Tuesday not to certify the ballot petition for a local option in Leetonia's Precinct A, which would have allowed for Sunday liquor sales at the Italian-American Club, 202 Main St., Leetonia.
The election board also refused to certify the petition submitted by James Bosela, a Columbiana school board member seeking re-election. In both cases, the election board determined the petitions submitted last week failed to include the proper number of valid signatures.
Special ed teacher
SALEM -- The city school board hired Tracy Gottschling of Salem to work as a special education teacher at Buckeye Elementary. Gottschling was hired this morning during a special school board meeting. This is her first full-time teaching job. She will be paid $24,950 annually.
Electrical fire
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- An electrical fire routed employees, patients and clients from about a dozen doctors' and lawyers' offices in Colonial Square Professional Building at 701 N. Hermitage Road at 12:34 p.m. Tuesday.
Fire Chief Robert Goeltz said the blaze was confined to a basement mechanical equipment room but the fire destroyed communications cables and telephone lines that serve the building. No one was hurt and the loss is insured; the building will be closed while repairs are made, Goeltz said.
The building is owned by George White Properties of Hermitage.
Lawsuit dismissed
LISBON -- A judge in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by six former employees of a Salem company, saying the court lacks jurisdiction in the matter.
The six workers claimed in a lawsuit filed earlier this year in common pleas court that they were wrongfully fired by Sekely Industries Inc. of Pennsylvania Ave., Salem, for engaging in union organizing activities.
In a recent decision, Judge David Tobin determined that the workers' claims against the company fall under the jurisdiction of the National Labor Relations Board, according to federal law. The plaintiffs in the suit are James Dattilio, Jesse Rufener, Bryan Dailey, Gary Guappone, Robert Stallsmith and Chris Imburgia.
Man dies in car crash
LISBON -- A 55-year-old Coraopolis, Pa., man died from injuries he suffered when the vehicle he drove on state Route 11 ran off the road in the rain near the West Point exit, hit an embankment and flipped over, a spokesman for the Ohio State Highway patrol said.
Alvey V. Kaufman was ejected from the 1996 Chevy Blazer at about 1 p.m. Tuesday. He was flown to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, where he died about 6:15 p.m., the OSHP said. A passenger, Richard Grejda, 52, of Pittsburgh, was not seriously injured and was treated at East Liverpool hospital, the patrol said.
Forgery arrest
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested Craig M. Burger, 32, of Oak Leaf Estates, West Middlesex, on a warrant charging him with forgery.
Police said Burger turned himself in at the police station Monday. He is accused of stealing checks from an acquaintance on Buhl Court on June 15 and cashing them for a total of $1,055. He was arraigned before District Justice James McMahon and freed on his own recognizance.
