COLUMBIANA -- Traffic is to be maintained with temporary signals during repair work on the bridge at state Route 164 just southwest of the city, Ohio Department of Transportation officials have announced. The work scheduled to begin today is to be completed by the end of October. The Phoenix Bridge Co. of Sidney has the contract for the $227,946 project.

EAST LIVERPOOL -- Ohio's first lady Hope Taft will be volunteering at the Greater East Liverpool Habitat for Humanity's construction site at 14663 East Liverpool Road at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Area public officials have been invited to volunteer at the site today through Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be an evening work session from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the site. Volunteers should wear clothing appropriate for construction and bring basic hand tools for interior construction and finishing work.
Boy dies after accident
SHARON, Pa. -- A 13-year-old Sharpsville boy, injured when he fell off his bicycle last Monday, died Sunday in Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Andrew Hando of Ridge Avenue died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to the Allegheny County coroner's office. The death was ruled accidental. Sharon police said Andrew was riding his bicycle down Columbia Street when he lost control and crashed, striking his head. He wasn't wearing a helmet. He had a bruise on his head and seemed disoriented, police said. His mother was following him in a car and took him to Sharon Regional Health System to be examined and he was then flown to Allegheny General.
Minor injuries in crash
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Jared O. Houston, 22, of Bon Air Drive, Hubbard, escaped with minor injuries after wrecking his car on Interstate 80 in a crash that closed the westbound lanes of the roadway for 90 minutes. Pennsylvania State Police said Houston was westbound and fell asleep around 3:20 p.m. Saturday. His car spun broadside and struck the guide rail, which impaled the passenger compartment. The car then spun back onto the roadway, blocking both lanes of traffic. Houston, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was pinned in the wreckage, and it took rescuers an hour to free him, police said. He was treated at United Community Hospital.
Salem break-ins
SALEM -- Three break-ins were reported to police over the weekend. Someone broke into the concession stand at Reilly Stadium off East Pershing Street and stole pop and candy. The crime was reported Sunday. A man said he entered his home on the 300 block of Ohio Avenue about 6 p.m. Sunday and was hit on the head by someone who apparently had broken into his home. The man was treated at Salem Community Hospital. A resident on the 200 block of Rose Avenue told police Sunday that someone entered her apartment through a window and took jewelry. The value of the items is undetermined.
Citizens police course
BUTLER, Pa. -- Applications are now being accepted at Butler Barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police for the 2001 Citizens Police Academy. The program begins Sept. 4 and will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. each Tuesday for 12 weeks. Residents of Mercer, Armstrong and Butler counties are eligible to attend, and class size is limited to 20 adults. The free academy, which covers topics ranging from accident investigation and reconstruction to vice and liquor control enforcement, is offered to promote a better understanding of how the department operates and to inform citizens of the different aspects of police work. NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Westminster College is offering several enrichment and leisure courses this fall. Formal admission to Westminster is not required, and the courses are open to the general public. Yoga and various computer classes are among the courses being offered. Stolen credit card
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Someone racked up about $1,000 worth of purchases on a stolen credit card, said Pennsylvania State Police. The card was taken sometime Thursday, and it was used at various locations in Lawrence County. The credit card is owned by a 33-year-old city woman.
