Covenant Lodge to mark 105th anniversary

GIRARD -- Covenant Lodge No. 59, Free and Accepted Masons, will celebrate its 105th anniversary with a banquet Sept. 15 at Mahoning Country Club.
The semiformal event will start at 7 p.m. and will honor those who have 20 years or more of membership. The cost is $25.
The speaker will be State Rep. Sylvester D. Patton Jr., 64th District of Ohio.
History: Phillip E. Williams is worshipful master of the lodge, which is the oldest black institution in Youngstown. In 1895, A.V. Page, Charles S. Smith, Jamous Amous, Hanson Clark and William Burk petitioned the most worshipful grand master of Ohio to institute a lodge in Youngstown. The petition was granted in 1896 and Covenant Lodge was the result. The groundwork for the organization began in 1776 when a group assembled as African Lodge No. 1 under permit from the Army lodge.
