BUHL DAY Recognition

This year's Buhl Day honorees are:
FRED BOLES
Boles retired as music teacher and band director in the Sharon City School district in 1987 after 34 years of service, but he hasn't given up his music. He still performs regularly with the Carmen Mico Orchestra, the Packard Music Hall Band in Warren and his own Fred Boles Quintet, playing clarinet and saxophone. He also teaches music at Marks Music, manages the Marks Concert Band and is active in church music, singing in the choir at the United Church of Christ. He also directed the church Bell Choir at one time. Boles said he is pleased that many of his students have kept music in their lives and have gone on to play in bands and symphonies.
JAMES E. WINNER JR.
Perhaps best known for his business achievements through Winner International's headquarters in Sharon, Pa., Winner is also being recognized for his many charitable endeavors. He created the Winner Foundation, which provides college scholarships and other community assistance, and is directly involved in a number of other foundations and charitable organizations. Winner has created jobs in the Shenango Valley through Winner International and a number of other business, including Winner Steel Services in Sharon. He bought and restored the Buhl Mansion where Frank and Julia Buhl lived and built a community art museum displaying replicas of works of the great masters. He also is in the process of converting the former Westinghouse Electric Corp. plant into an industrial park.
PATRICIA WOODINGS
Woodings taught school in Pittsburgh before moving to the Shenango Valley in 1963 and began her extensive volunteer work as a member of the local Newcomers Club. She is a charter member of the Mercer County League of Women Voters, served eight years as its president or co-president and served two years on the state board of the League of Women Voters. She is treasurer of the Mercer County Agricultural Preservation Board and is part of the planning division of the United Way of Mercer County. She has served as a volunteer at Sharon Regional Health System for more than 30 years and has been active on numerous other boards and agencies.
