Poland residents can meet police, firefighters at event

POLAND -- Township residents will be given the opportunity to get together with local police and firefighters in a relaxed, fun atmosphere at the first annual Safety Forces Day on Saturday. Activities will begin at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Giant Eagle store on Center Road.
Police Chief Carl Massullo said the event is a way for residents here to get to know those who protect them outside of a nonthreatening situation and also a way for law enforcement and fire officials to thank the community for all the support received over the years.
Massullo said officers will have more time to talk to residents in a casual manner than if they were on a call or in an emergency situation. Community input will be welcomed, he said.
"The customer, in this case being the community, is very important to us, and the police and fire departments have enjoyed great support from the community over the years," the chief said.
The police and fire departments will showcase vehicles, equipment and programs that are used to provide services to the community. There will also be displays and handouts from the D.A.R.E. and youth diversion programs.
McGruff the crime dog and a clown will also be on hand to entertain children.
Hot dogs, chips, cookies and other refreshments supplied by the Poland Giant Eagle will be available to all who attend.
