SHARON, Pa. -- Shenango Valley Community Library is taking registrations for a four-session book discussion program called "Detecting Women," a series led by Dr. Mark DelMaramo of Thiel College, in which participants will read and discuss four works by notable women mystery writers. The program is open to adults only and is free but space is limited and registration is required. The group will meet in the library at 6 p.m. Sept. 26, Oct. 17, Nov. 7 and Nov. 28. "Detecting Women" is part of "Read About It!," a new book discussion series developed by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Shenango Valley is one of 24 libraries in the state chosen to be host of a "Read About It!" program this year. To register, call the library at (724) 981-4360.
Volunteer awards
AKRON -- The Eighth District Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars is sponsoring its 12th annual National Outstanding Young Volunteer of the Year Awards for pupils age 12-15. Applicants do not have to be sons or daughters of VFW or Auxiliary members, and any pupil interested in applying should contact his or her local VFW Auxiliary. Two national winners will be honored in April 2002 at the national community service conference in Washington and will receive $1,000 in cash awards.

The federal government's cancer site is also the best there is: www.nci.nih.gov. The New York State Center for Consumer Health Information is providing access to managed-care performance summaries and disciplinary actions against physicians (www.health.state.ny.us).
