Council settles with fired police officer

WASHINGTONVILLE -- Village council has agreed to a settlement with fired police officer Michael Koenig.
A motion filed Wednesday in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court states Koenig's appeal of his June 19 firing was dismissed because the parties reached a settlement in the matter.
Council voted Wednesday on a matter related to the police department, but did not give details.
Village Solicitor Richard Shelar said council approved an agreement in which Koenig's record will show he resigned rather than that he was terminated. Shelar said the village also agreed to give Koenig a neutral letter of recommendation for employment.
Shelar said Koenig was terminated after a May raid by the state liquor control board on the Washingtonville VFW.
Koenig was assigned to assist the LCB by Sgt. Frank Herring. The police and Mayor Chuck Morrow did not agree on the department's involvement in the raid. Morrow told Koenig and Herring to leave the VFW, stating he did not want village police involved.
