BOARDMAN -- Police are looking for a man who robbed the Marathon gas station on South Avenue at gunpoint Wednesday night.
According to reports, the man ordered an employee to come from a back storage room and empty the cash register at 10:30 p.m. The robber, who was covered from head to toe so only his eyes were showing, pulled a gun, gave the clerk a bag and said, "Fill it up."
After taking an undisclosed amount of money, reports say, the man walked out of the store and across the parking lot.
Lawyers seek releaseof testimony transcript
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lawyers for city policeman Christopher Lombard have filed a request in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to see a transcript of testimony that led to his indictment by a county grand jury.
Lombard, 32, of Gypsy Lane, and Mark L. Rakocy, 34, of Cordova Avenue, were indicted in April on robbery charges. Rakocy is also a city police officer. The men are accused of taking $480 from a Struthers man in the restroom of Smokey Joe's Tavern in March. They were off duty at the time.
Grand jury proceedings are secret in Ohio, which is why Lombard's attorneys have asked Judge James C. Evans to order the release of the transcript.
Sentenced in thefts
YOUNGSTOWN -- Steve Mango, 31, of Canton, was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years in prison by Judge Maureen A. Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Mango had pleaded guilty in May to charges of involuntary manslaughter, robbery, failure to comply with a police order and two counts of theft.
He is charged in thefts from a Perkins restaurant and Dairy Mart convenience store in Boardman earlier this year. He fled when police tried to stop him, and his car collided with three other vehicles at Youngstown-Poland Road and Midlothian Boulevard.
Phillip E. Swantner, 34, of Struthers, was in one of those cars and died about three weeks later of injuries from the crash.
God's Lady program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bread of Heaven Ministries of Youngstown will have its first session of its God's Lady program from 6 to 8 tonight at the YMCA.
The program is aimed at helping young women choose the right paths in life. The program will meet each Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the YMCA.
Woman reports robbery
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 35-year-old woman told police she was robbed at gunpoint and feared she would be sexually assaulted Wednesday morning outside her home in the 200 block of Marmion Avenue, and the robber's accomplice drove off in her car.
The victim said she left the engine running as she ran into her house at 8:40 a.m., then returned and was confronted by a man who grabbed her, put a gun to her back, demanded money and tried to pull her pants down. A second man drove off in her car. The gunman ran away.
Police later found her car nearby in the 200 block of East Florida Avenue. Taken was the woman's purse containing $15, personal papers, 10 gold rings and two diamond rings.
