Council approves checking backgrounds

CANFIELD -- City council approved an ordinance Wednesday night requiring ice cream vendors to pass a background check by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation before they receive a city vending license.
Ice cream vendors have not been required to submit to background checks in the past.
City Manager Charles Tieche said the new ordinance will help protect local children. He added that the city also requires door-to-door salesmen to pass background checks.
The ordinance for ice cream vendors will take effect in 30 days.
Also Wednesday, council approved a resolution to pay McCourt Construction of Youngstown $168,225 to pave five city streets: Bradford, Brook Park, Fairview and Blueberry drives and Timber Run. Tieche said the paving would be complete before the end of this construction season.
