HERMITAGE School district to use armory for program

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Hermitage School District will again use the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory as the site of its alternative education program.
The board approved a contract Monday with the National Guard to rent its facility at 740 N. Hermitage Road, adjacent to Hickory High School, for the coming school year at a cost of $8,568. That gives the district access to the building for 180 school days.
The program is designed to provide continuing education for disruptive students who have been removed from the regular classroom.
The district also will have a school psychologist on staff this year.
The school board voted to hire DaVee Hazlett to fill the post at an estimated salary of $51,281. The figure will likely be adjusted as the Hermitage Education Association is in the midst of contract negotiations for this school year and the salary will be determined by that agreement.
Superintendent Karen Ionta said the position of school psychologist was vacant last year. Hazlett will serve all grade levels, she said.
