CLEVELAND -- Monday's deadline passed for indicted U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. to file motions that allege prosecutorial misconduct in his racketeering case.
The 17th District congressman from Poland could have filed the motions here or in federal court in Youngstown, but as of 4:45 p.m. Monday, nothing was filed.
Traficant faxed motions Friday, but U.S. District Court Judge Lesley Brooks Wells rejected them, repeating her order that originals must be filed with the clerk.
The congressman could file the documents today -- along with a request that the judge accept them.
His trial is Feb. 4.

Fire was arson
LIBERTY -- An arsonist is being blamed for a Monday night fire that caused an estimated $140,000 damage at Pauley's Trucking Co., 1660 Harding Ave.
Fire Chief Robert Catchpole said four fires were set outside shortly after 10:30 p.m. Flames were confined to the exterior and inside a roof area. Four trucks inside the building were slightly damaged.
A witness told police she saw a man carrying what appeared to be a five-gallon gasoline can behind the building and then saw the flames.

The truck can transport up to six firefighters and their gear, compared to four firefighters in the department's old ladder truck.
