CORTLAND Officials to get raises if readings pass

CORTLAND -- City administrators are one step closer to getting pay increases.
Council approved Monday the first reading of an ordinance giving raises to all department heads and the council clerk.
The ordinance must pass two more readings.
Mayor Melissa Long has proposed that council give raises to the police chief, the police captain, fire chief, finance director, service director and council clerk.
Under the legislation, the finance director and service director would get the largest raises to bring their salaries closer to those of the other administrators.
The mayor proposed giving Fran Moyer, finance director, a $5,245 raise and Paul Makosky, service director, a $2,968 increase.
Council also listened to Atty. David Engler explain the countywide public transportation proposal being spearheaded by Niles Mayor Ralph A. Infante.
Some communities have indicated they would join the system. Each community would pay a fee based on population.
Cortland council took no action on it Monday.
