YOUNGSTOWN -- Events for the YMCA's Community Cup begin this weekend.
Volleyball competition starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, and finals are at 5 p.m. Sunday. Basketball competition begins 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Banner Competition starts Tuesday. Company banners will be displayed in the Sears Concourse at Southern Park Mall, where the public can vote on the favorite for the Community Choice Award through Aug. 27.
The Community Cup promotes fitness, company pride, teamwork and community spirit. Twenty-two businesses and organizations in Mahoning and Trumbull counties will participate in 16 events.
Aid for firefighters
WARREN -- Two city firefighters injured in a house fire Dec. 31 will split $2,400 thanks to the 2nd annual poker run sponsored by Rural/Metro Ambulance of Youngstown.
A check for that amount was to be presented this morning to firefighters Nick Radich and Darryl Anderson.
Area firefighters and the public rode motorcycles July 22 to locations in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, picking up a card at each spot. Whoever had the best hands at the end of the run took home prizes. Raffles raised additional money.
Radich and Anderson were burned while fighting a blaze at the Williamsburg N.W. home of Janet Provitt, who died. Both men have returned to work.
