State park plans variety of programs



PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Geology, outdoor plants and 19th-century recipe ideas will be featured in programs this weekend at McConnell's Mill State Park.
"Glaciers, Gorges and Geology" begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Alpha Pass trailhead near the Old Mill. Geological changes along the Slippery Rock Creek gorge will be discussed.
"Stone Ground Grain Day" is from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Old Mill. Recipes popular in the mid-1800s, such as apple corn bread, Appalachian molasses bread, sourdough buckwheat pizza crust and other items made from stone ground grains, will be available.
"Natural Nasties" starts at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kildoo trailhead adjacent to the covered bridge. A naturalist will identify various hazardous plants and animals in the area and talk about ways to prepare for them.
Historic Grist Mill tours are at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. each Friday through Sunday during August at the Old Mill. The Old Mill is open 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seven days a week.
McConnell's Mill State Park is off U.S. Route 422 just west of Interstate 79.
