Recovering from illness
SHARON, Pa. -- The superintendent of the Sharon City School District is a patient at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, recovering from a heart attack. Richard Rossi, 52, became ill Friday while out of town and was admitted to a hospital that evening, school officials said. He is undergoing treatment and could be released by the end of the week, officials said.
Teacher-director hired
SHARON, Pa. -- Melissa Kaschak of Sharon has been hired as the new secondary music teacher/band director at Sharon High School. The Sharon City School board made the appointment Wednesday. Kaschak replaces Jason Cheskawich who resigned. Kaschak taught in the Ravenna City schools last year as choir director and assistant band director. School officials would not say what she will be paid.
Injured in accident
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A city man was in fair condition this morning at UPMC Pittsburgh after a car crashed into his motorcycle. Pennsylvania State Police said Karla Flaisman, 18, of R.D. 1, Edinburg, was driving north on Airport Road in Union Township and failed to yield at a right of way crossing U.S. Route 422. Police said her car crashed into motorcyclist Paul Massey, 57, of 325 Sunnyside Road, New Castle at 5:47 p.m. Wednesday. Flaisman was treated at Jameson Hospital. Police did not say what type of car she was driving.
Crash closes street
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A portion of East Washington Street was closed after a car crashed into a utility pole leaving power lines dangling. City police said David Newton, 46, of Taylor Street was traveling south on East Washington Street at 10:57 p.m. Wednesday when he crashed into a Penn Power pole at the CVS Pharmacy at 734 E. Washington St. Police said Newton was taken to Jameson Hospital, where he was treated for head and neck injuries. Police are still investigating the accident. Penn Power spokesman Bart Spagnola said they had to shut off electric power to 31 homes to repair the pole and lines. That section of East Washington Street was closed until power was restored at 6:50 a.m. today.
Rifles stolen from home
WHEATLAND, Pa. -- Police said several rifles were stolen in a burglary at a home on Chestnut Street. The burglary was reported at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Cause of driver's death
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle said a New Wilmington man whose pickup crashed Wednesday on Pa. Route 18 died of a heart attack he suffered moments before the crash. Police said Jerald King, 68, of R.D. 1, New Wilmington, was southbound around 2:45 p.m. when his truck veered across the road, ran through yards and then went back across the road before coming to rest in a clump of small trees. He was pronounced dead a short time later at UPMC Horizon, Farrell.
2 arrested in break-in
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested two men they said broke into Valley Car Wash at 1364 E. State St. July 4. Ricky J. Crowl, 19, of Davison, Mich., and Matthew S. Totin, 19, who gave police a Walnut Avenue, Sharon, address but who is also believed to be living in Michigan, were picked up Monday on warrants charging them with burglary, criminal conspiracy and criminal trespass. Police said the pair broke into the carwash between 12:30 and 2:30 a.m. and took some change. They were arrested in Brookfield Township a short time later after breaking into a carwash there, police said. They were arraigned before District Justice James McMahon, who ordered them to be held on $150,000 bond each pending a preliminary hearing at a later date.
Car runs over teen
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police said Wednesday that an intoxicated 16-year-old who was run over by a car ended up with minor cuts and bruises. Police said the boy left a Reynolds Street home after drinking about seven cans of beer and laid down in front of a 1990 Buick parked near a hill a few houses away at 9:35 p.m. Aug. 9. The car's owner, Richard Salley, 61, of Reynolds Street did not see the teen when he got in the car and drove over the boy with his front tires. Salley said he heard a noise and backed up, running over the boy again, to see what was under the car. Police said no charges are pending. Police gave no reason for not releasing information on the event until today.
