YOUNGSTOWN -- Sam's Club of Boardman and Anita Chambers of Struthers were the first-place winners in Saturday's Ride for Rescue.
More than 100 participants in the first annual event raised $4,500 for the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, and more donations are expected. The event took place in Mill Creek Park.
Awards were presented based on the total donations each participant collected. Sam's Club was awarded the corporate first-place trophy, and Chambers won the individual first-place award.
Fire department grant
WASHINGTON -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced today that seven Ohio fire departments will receive grants in the fourth round of awards under the Assistance to Firefighters Program. The departments include Milton Township Volunteer department, Berlin Center; $97,934 for personal protective equipment. The department is among the 216 across the U.S. that will receive nearly $9.9 million in grants in this round of awards.
'Back-to-School Blast'
BOARDMAN -- Beeghly Oaks Nursing Home will sponsor a free "Back-to-School Blast" for children 4 years old through junior high school starting at 2 p.m. Monday in the nursing home facilities off Market Street. There will be games, clowns, food, ponies and school-related prizes awarded to those who attend.
Counterfeit money
CAMPBELL -- Police confiscated a counterfeit $50 bill that a Burger King employee used to try to buy food at McDonald's on McCartney Road. The Youngstown resident told police she was at McDonald's on her break. She said her boyfriend gave her the bill. Police are still investigating. No arrests have been made.
Robbery reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- Girls from Woodworth Road in Beaver Township and Indianola Road in Boardman, both 16, say they were robbed when their car broke down on the South Side around 11:10 p.m. Thursday. After a group of people helped push the car on Erie Street near Ellenwood Avenue, two of them grabbed the girls' purses and a cell phone, reports show.
Inspections probed
BOARDMAN -- Township police are investigating reports that businesses have been paying an unlicensed man passing as a fire extinguisher inspector to check their equipment. Three township retailers have reported paying the man about $50 each for service calls. One store manager told police that two fire extinguishers were taken in for service and never returned.
Women questioned
BOARDMAN -- Township police have questioned three Struthers women who accepted a ride home from police officers after allegedly running out on a restaurant bill. Reports say officers noticed the three women staggering around a Denny's Restaurant parking lot at 3:45 a.m. today, and told the women they could not drive home. After several attempts to call for a ride for the women, an officer took them to a Struthers address. Shortly after dropping the women off, township police received a call from a Denny's employee who said the women didn't pay their bill. An officer called one of the women, who said she had no money and was not going to pay anything. Denny's personnel said they would press charges.
Youngstown manshot in the foot
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police said a Youngstown man was shot in the foot as he walked near the intersection of Wallis Avenue and Highland Street. Marcus V. Kennon, 27, of East Florida Street, Youngstown, told police he was walking along the street around 4:30 p.m. Sunday when a black car drove by. Kennon said he heard a noise from the car and he felt pain in his right foot. Police said he was shot. He was treated at UPMC Horizon.
