WEATHERSFIELD Trustees reject request for property annexation
The township agreed to pick up additional medical premium payments for full-time police officers.
MINERAL RIDGE -- Township trustees rejected a request for annexation to Niles of 32 acres of undeveloped property in McKinley Heights off Wabash Avenue and U.S. Route 422 behind McMenamy's.
Trustees said the land is vacant but did not comment on what was planned for the land by property owners Jim Pace, Jim Coates and the Leonard Trust.
Trustee Fred Bobovnyk said that Weathersfield doesn't want annexation.
"Niles and Girard are already chewing up the township," he said.
Trumbull County commissioners have the final say.
Changes for police: Trustees also approved changes in the police contract, which runs through June 30, 2003, increasing the amount of overtime full-time officers can work and medical costs the township will pay for the nine full-time officers each year of the three-year pact, retroactive to July 1, 2000.
The medical insurance premiums the township will pay go up to $900 from July 1, 2000, to June 30, 2001 instead of the previously agreed upon $759; $1,000 from July 1, 2001, to June 30, 2002, instead of $834; and $1,100 from July 1, 2002, through June 30, 2003, instead of $909.
Trumbull County Engineer John Latell informed trustees by letter that the 35 mph speed limit set for West Liberty Street Extension in 1958 was studied and a speed reduction is not warranted at this time, unless the township police department has more information about problems with speed in the area.
Latell added that the physical structure of the road was also checked and evaluated by an independent company in August 2000 and the road structure is sufficient to carry the weight of tractor-trailers.
Latell said that markings will be added on county roads and West Liberty Street will also be marked, including an allowance for a short passing zone.
Township administrator Dave Pugh said there will be a tire collection the week of Sept. 17 and residents are permitted to put out four tires per household.
