COLUMBUS -- Two Mahoning Valley organizations were among 69 communities and nonprofit groups in Ohio to receive state grants to assist homeless people. The Warren-Trumbull Urban League received $69,900, and the Community Action Agency of Columbiana County Inc. received $47,200. Ohio Department of Development's emergency shelter grant program provided about $6 million to agencies to be used for emergency shelter, supportive services, case management, referral services and transportation.
Mustang 'Stampede'will benefit hospital
SHARON, Pa. -- The Mahoning Valley Mustangs will hold its fourth annual "Stampede" all-Mustang car show Sunday in the parking lot of the Hot Rod Cafe at Chestnut Avenue and Connelly Boulevard.
Proceeds from this event, as from the past three shows, will go to Tod Children's Hospital in Youngstown.
The club has managed to raise $2,000 at each of its previous shows and expects to do a lot better this year, said Mike Quinn, publicity chairman for the event.
More than 150 entries are expected.
The show raises money through entry fees, donations from show visitors and a Chinese auction held during the event.
Entry to the grounds is free.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and judging is at noon.
Entries will be rated on workmanship, condition and cleanliness and 54 awards, plus a "Best of Show" honor will be presented at 3:30 p.m.
Music for the show will be provided by Sundown Sound.
Woman's car stolen
SALEM -- A woman living on the 700 block of South Lundy Avenue told police her car was stolen while it was parked along the street near her home. The vehicle, a 1992 Buick Century, was taken late Monday or early Tuesday.
Three report break-ins
SALEM -- Three people told police their vehicles were broken into. One vehicle, parked along the 600 block of South Lundy Avenue had its stereo taken. A stereo also was removed from a vehicle parked along the 700 block of Prospect Street. A console was stolen from a vehicle parked along the 1300 block of South Lincoln Avenue. The crimes were reported to police Tuesday and were believed to have occurred overnight Monday.
Man pleads innocent
LISBON -- Clifford Hill, 32, of Guilford Lake, pleaded innocent Tuesday in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court to a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Hill is the estranged husband of Tracy Hill, 24, of Middleton Township, who was last seen June 7. Hill is not considered a suspect in her disappearance. He was charged by authorities after being found June 18 with a car normally used by his wife. The vehicle belongs to Mrs. Hill's mother, who said Clifford Hill did not have her permission to use it. He is in the county jail.
Owner hammers burglar
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a McClure Avenue man suspected of burglarizing Mike's Corner Market on North Oakland Avenue was hit with a hammer by the store owner. The man 28, was first taken to Sharon Regional Health System but later transferred to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Youngstown for treatment of a skull fracture, police said. No condition report was available this morning. Police said the man smashed a front door window to get into the store around 11:25 p.m. Tuesday and was trying to remove the cash register when Dominic Cinicola, the store owner who lives in the building, hit him in head with a hammer. The man then ran away. Acting on a tip, police arrested the suspect at his home about an hour later. He is charged with burglary, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and loitering and prowling at night and is under police guard in St. Elizabeth's, police said.
Dog puts car in gear
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Ellwood City police said a dog left inside a 1997 Ford Taurus bumped the car into gear, causing it to roll into a Wampum Avenue house. The car, owned by Betty A. Rouse of York Avenue, was legally parked before the accident at 2:16 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Authorities didn't say how heavily the car and house were damaged.
