COLUMBUS -- Two Mahoning Valley organizations were among 69 communities and nonprofit groups in Ohio to receive state grants to assist homeless people. The Warren-Trumbull Urban League received $69,900, and the Community Action Agency of Columbiana County Inc. received $47,200. Ohio Department of Development's emergency shelter grant program provided about $6 million to agencies to be used for emergency shelter, supportive services, case management, referral services and transportation.
Crack found in court
GIRARD -- Judge Michael Bernard reported that someone may have been smoking crack in the girl's restroom at the municipal court. When the cleaning lady was changing an empty roll of toilet paper Tuesday evening, she upset a glass tube that had suspected crack cocaine inside it.
Woman uses fake ID
NILES -- The manager for Leroy's Jewelers at the Eastwood Mall reported a woman used a fake ID to open an account at the store. The woman proceeded to charge more than $2,400 to the account. A woman whose name is on the account says she never opened one or charged anything to it.
Layoffs approved
WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners have approved laying off three nonunion employees at the Trumbull County Child Support Enforcement Agency.
Two unit supervisors and a public information officer will be losing their job, according to the resolution passed by commissioners Tuesday.
In recent weeks, 12 unionized workers have also been laid off, to make up for a $400,000 reduction in funding from the state.
Nurse sues doctor
WARREN -- A registered nurse is suing Dr. Pedro Yap and St. Joseph Health Center, contending the doctor grabbed her by the wrist and dragged her about 10 feet while she was working.
Kathleen M. Downs-Burkett and her husband, Jeffrey Burkett, both of Marshall Avenue, Warren, filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Neither Dr. Yap nor hospital officials could be reached to comment.
The suit alleges that the encounter occurred Aug. 14, 2000, and that Downs-Burkett suffered injuries to her wrist, elbow and arm.
The suit is seeking more that $25,000 in damages.
Pest control to spray
HOWLAND -- Alexander Pest Control, working under contract for township trustees, will spray Howland neighborhoods for mosquitoes from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. Residents are asked to close their windows, keep pets indoors and refrain from leaving food outside the night of the spraying. In case of rain, spraying will take place the following evening.
Scrap tire collection
HOWLAND -- The township public works department will collect scrap tires Saturday. Residents may put out as many as eight tires, with rims removed, at the curbside by 8 a.m. Saturday. No truck tires will be accepted. The collection is provided through a grant from the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District.
School orientation
NILES -- Edison Junior High School's orientation program will be at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday and Aug. 23 in the school auditorium.
The program is to acquaint parents and pupils with the school and an orientation packet will be distributed. The sessions will last about an hour. People planning to attend should call (330) 652-5656 by Friday.
Three report break-ins
SALEM -- Three people told police their vehicles were broken into. One vehicle, parked along the 600 block of South Lundy Avenue had its stereo taken. A stereo also was removed from a vehicle parked along the 700 block of Prospect Street. A console was stolen from a vehicle parked along the 1300 block of South Lincoln Avenue. The crimes were reported to police Tuesday and were believed to have occurred overnight Monday.
Dog puts car in gear
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Ellwood City police said a dog left inside a 1997 Ford Taurus bumped the car into gear, causing it to roll into a Wampum Avenue house. The car, owned by Betty A. Rouse of York Avenue, was legally parked before the accident at 2:16 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Authorities didn't say how heavily the car and house were damaged.
