MERCER, Pa. -- The Springfield Restaurant Group will be host to its second annual charitable event to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Springfield Grille on Pa. Route 19 just south of Interstate 80. The buffet-style dinner, "A Taste of Springfields," will feature creations from the six restaurants that make up the restaurant group-- Iron Bridge Inn, Rachel's Roadhouse and the Springfield Grille, all on Route 19, the Springfield Grille in Boardman, the Log Cabin Inn in Harmony, Pa., and the Hickory Bar & amp; Grille in Hermitage. Tickets are $50 and can be bought at any of the six restaurants and include dinner, dessert, entertainment and a door prize drawing. All proceeds, including tips to employees, will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western Pennsylvania.
Bridge to close 12 hours
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The bridge on Baker Hill-Cochran Road between Pa. Route 58 and Delaware Road will be closed all day Tuesday for routine maintenance. Detours will be in place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
AirTran to end route
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- AirTran Airways announced it will end its three flights a day from Pittsburgh International Airport to New York LaGuardia, the Allegheny County Airport Authority said. AirTran will end the flights Sept. 3 because of lack of customers. The Allegheny Airport Authority Chairman Glenn R. Mahone said AirTran's routes to Chicago, Philadelphia and Atlanta are doing well.
Senior Olympics
SALEM -- The 14th Annual Columbiana County Senior Olympics, sponsored by Clemente Ambulance, will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Salem High School. The event is open to all nursing home residents in Columbiana County and features competitions in bingo, basketball, spelling, bowling, shuffleboard, golf, darts, horse shoes, walking, wheelchair racing and softball tossing. The 14th Annual Senior Olympics for Mahoning and Trumbull counties took place last week at Austintown Fitch High School. More than 480 nursing home residents participated, Spencer reported.
Kiddie porn charges
WAYNESBURG, Pa. (AP) -- A state police corporal accused of using the department's internal computer system to view child pornography faces additional charges after police examined his home computer.
Cpl. John R. Mason, 40, is a 10-year veteran trooper stationed at the Waynesburg barracks, about 40 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. Police said he moved from his family's Aliquippa home and now lives with his parents in Collegeville, Montgomery County, near Philadelphia.
Mason was suspended without pay in February after he was accused of viewing pornographic Web sites and downloading images of nude or partially nude boys while on duty. He faced 24 counts of sexual abuse of children and criminal use of a communication facility, but Greene County prosecutors filed 14 more counts Friday after Mason's wife brought the family's computer to police after her daughter found images of nude boys on it.
