YOUNGSTOWN -- Billy Martin, the 10-year-old Niles boy who has been promoting bulletproof vests for police dogs through his Bite the Bullet campaign, received a $1,000 check Friday from the Kiwanis Club of Youngstown. The money will be used to buy vests for Youngstown Police Department dogs Bar and Rico.
4 trials in loud music
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four jury trials have been set in municipal court for 27-year-old Jamar A. Jones, who has that many loud music charges pending. The Compton Lane man has two jury trials Sept. 26, and one each on Sept. 27 and Oct. 1. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail and mandatory $600 fine on each charge and the loss of his sound equipment.
In hospital, not court
YOUNGSTOWN -- Earline D. Wiggins checked into a hospital instead of showing up in municipal court for arraignment Friday on a falsification charge, said Detective Sgt. Delphine Baldwin-Casey. The judge issued a warrant that will be served once Wiggins, 42, of Austintown is released from the hospital, the detective said. Wiggins is accused of making a false claim to a 911 call taker that a Youngstown minister was sexually molesting a mentally handicapped woman.
Police car rammed
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested a 32-year-old East Budd Street man accused of ramming his car into a police car at Budd Street and Oakland Avenue early Friday. An officer on patrol saw Carl R. Lampkins' car run partially through a red light around 1:30 a.m. and ordered him to pull over. When the officer pulled up behind the car, the man suddenly backed up, ramming the front of the cruiser, and then took off, police said. Police chased him along the Sharon-Farrell border for several minutes before he finally went south on Emerson Avenue into Farrell and stopped. He tried to flee on foot, but police caught him in the 900 block of Wallis Avenue. He was freed on a $5,000 unsecured bond after arraignment on charges of aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding police, recklessly endangering another person, hit and run and numerous traffic violations.
Mathews board meeting
VIENNA -- Mathews Board of Education has changed its Aug. 15 meeting to 7 p.m. Aug. 21. It will be conducted in the board offices, 4434-B Warren-Sharon Road.
