Man, 84, dies in crash
MERCER, Pa. -- A Franklin man died Thursday afternoon after a wreck in Mill Creek Township.
Carl Collins, 84, of Grant Street, Franklin, was pronounced dead at UPMC Greenville. The passenger in Collins' car, Kathrine Collins, same age and address, was in serious condition this morning at St. Vincent's Hospital in Erie.
Carl's car was struck by a car driven by Gene Britten, 22, of Meadville, about 2:15 p.m. Thursday at state Route 173 and Georgetown Road. Carl had pulled into the intersection on Georgetown road after stopping at a stop sign.
There is no stop sign on state Route 173 at the intersection. Britten was not injured.
United registration
HANOVERTON -- Registration for new pupils in United Local School District will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Elementary pupils may register at the elementary office from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Junior high and high school pupils should register at the high school counselor's office from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Parents or guardians need to bring each child's birth certificate, Social Security number and custody documents, if applicable. Parents of new kindergarten pupils must provide immunization records.
Two injured in crash
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said two people were injured, one seriously, in a two-car crash at Mercer-New Castle and Leesburg Station roads in Wilmington Township at 8:15 a.m. Thursday.
Police said a vehicle driven by Arthur L. Jensen, 77, of Rae Street, New Wilmington, was northbound on the Mercer-New Castle Road and had stopped for a stop sign at the intersection but then pulled into the path of a car traveling east on Leesburg Station Road.
Jensen's car was struck broadside on the driver's side, police said.
Jensen suffered severe injuries, police said. He was taken to Jameson Memorial Hospital in New Castle and then transferred to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh where he was in critical condition early today.
The driver of the second car, Jill Brown, 27, of Wozniak Road, Mercer, was treated at Sharon Regional Health System.
Her daughter, Jocelyn, 6 months, was in a car seat and wasn't injured, police said.
Driver flees sinking car
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- A Bessemer woman escaped from her car early today after it plunged down a 150 foot embankment and into the Hillsville Quarry.
Pennsylvania State Police said Carrie Lou Sheehan, 19, lost control of her 1996 Chevrolet Monte Carlo as she was traveling around a bend on Hillsville Road, near Main Street in Mahoning Township at 1:10 a.m. today.
The car went off the road, down an embankment and into the water of the quarry.
State police said the car landed on its driver's side with all but the passenger side wheels submerged in the water.
Sheehan exited the car, climbed the embankment and walked to a nearby club where she called for help, police said.
She was treated at Jameson Hospital in New Castle.
Poker run benefit
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- A benefit motorcycle poker run and party are planned to help a man needing a second heart transplant. Bob Verano, 41, of Mount Jackson, had a heart transplant about 10 years ago, but that heart is now failing, said organizers of the benefit. The poker run will begin at noon Saturday at Gino's Nite Trax, U.S. Route 224 in Hillsville. The cost is $10 per person, and registration begins at 11 a.m. The party starts at 8 p.m. at Gino's Nite Trax and the cost is $5 per person. There will be food, door prizes, a Chinese auction and the band, Heavy Weather.
Storms cause outages
SALEM -- Thunderstorms caused widespread power outages Thursday in Columbiana County, affecting about 1,300 customers, Ohio Edison reported.
The outages, which began about 6 p.m., were scattered and not all 1,300 users were without power at the same time, LuAnn Koch, Edison area manager, said today.
The average outage lasted about four hours, she said, but some customers were without power for nearly 12 hours.
Lisbon principal resigns
LISBON -- The village school board accepted the resignation of Dr. Margaret Martin, who is leaving her post as McKinley Elementary principal after two years on the job.
The panel took the action Thursday during a special meeting.
She has told the board she is seeking work elsewhere, Superintendent Charles McShane said today.
She's being replaced by David Philibin, a 28-year educator who retired three years ago as principal at Davis Elementary in Austintown. Philibin will be paid $54,000 for his one-year contract.
