Incoherent swimmer
WARREN -- A man swimming in the Mahoning River behind WCI Steel would get out of the water only after being coaxed for two hours Thursday by Warren Township police and Trumbull County deputies.
WCI security officers reported to police at 9:35 a.m. that they had seen a swimmer not far from the falls under the Dover Avenue trestle.
Authorities said the man, who was wearing shorts and a pair of work boots, was incoherent and gave what they think was a false name when he came out of the river.
He was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital for assessment.
Heated pot sparks fire
WARREN -- An overheated pot of pirogies burst into flames about 8:30 a.m. today, sparking a kitchen fire that caused about $15,000 damage to a home at 1565 Gordon Road in Warren Township.
Township Fire Chief Ken Schick said it took his department about 15 minutes to extinguish the flames, which spread up the back wall of the two-story frame house.
There was smoke damage throughout the home, which is occupied by Jeremy Host and owned by Carl Streets of Gordon Road, Schick said. Streets said the home is insured.
Police arrest 2 at cafe
WARREN -- Police arrested two Youngstown residents at the Central Cafe, 480 E. Market St.
Ethel May Smith, 50, of Mistletoe Avenue and Quinn Willis, 40, of Upland Avenue were arrested Thursday just before midnight and were to be arraigned in municipal court this morning.
They are charged with impersonating police officers and illegal possession of a firearm.
Theft at Dairy Mart
WARREN -- Dairy Mart reported to police that a man posing as a drug enforcement agent stole money about 1 a.m. today.
Police said the man, described only as being black, identified himself as a DEA agent and told the clerk to give him $55 to pay for an undercover drug buy he had just made in the parking lot.
Crews clean up spill
HUBBARD -- Township firefighters and hazardous materials crews were called to clean up a polymer and fuel spill Thursday afternoon on state Route 7 in Hubbard Township.
The spill occurred about 2:30 p.m., when a tractor-trailer driven by Timothy Rys, 35, of Jonesboro, Ark., slid off the side of the southbound lanes near Chestnut Ridge and flipped onto its side, striking a sign, a telephone pole and a tree.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating. Rys was treated at Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.
Troopers said polymer, a liquid roofing material, is not considered hazardous.
Crash victim improves
CONNEAUT, Pa. -- A 40-year-old woman injured during a weekend boating accident on Conneaut Lake that involved a Hubbard man is improving.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission in Meadville would not release the name of the 18-year-old Hubbard man who was driving a ski boat.
His boat collided with a pontoon boat operated by Allen Varner of Springboro, Pa. His wife, Kathy, remains hospitalized in Hamot Medical Center, Erie. She was moved Thursday out of intensive care. Their 9-year-old son was not injured.
Frank Parise, commission assistant regional supervisor, said the two boats collided shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday after a fireworks display. He said the ski boat, which also contained three juveniles, rounded a point and crashed into the Varner boat.
None of those in the ski boat was injured, Parise said.
Trustees set meeting
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees will conduct an informational meeting and work session for residents of the Sable Creek development off Niles-Carver Road, as well as county officials, Monday at 7 p.m. in the township administration building.
Sable Creek residents have expressed concerns over Gary Ventling's plans to buy five acres at the end of St. Mary Drive on the edge of the development to build a house.
Sherri Craver, assistant zoning inspector, said they have told township officials they already have a water runoff and drainage problems and are concerned whether Ventling will have to follow the same restrictions they must observe in Sable Creek.
Zoning inspector Dave Pugh is to be at the session. The Trumbull County Engineer's Office, health department, planning commission and possibly county commissioners have been invited.
Work session planned
HARTFORD -- Hartford Township trustees will conduct a work session at 11 a.m. Saturday to review the township's cellular service.
