Foundation finishes business with its last scholarships

WARREN -- The Trumbull County Private Industry Council Foundation was to go out of existence today, as the last $100,000 in its bank accounts is donated for scholarships at a ceremony in Courthouse square.
The county Private Industry Council, which was charged with administering federal job training programs, went out of business in June 2000 when its responsibilities were shifted to the department of jobs and family services, said Thomas Mahoney, former director of PIC, now head of the Trumbull County Department of Jobs and Family Services.
The money donated today was originally raised by a foundation associated with PIC to help people who fell outside the income guidelines of the programs it administered. It was collected at charity events like golf outings, and in fees for services performed by PIC for private companies, Mahoney said.
What remains of the foundation's money has been split down the middle, with Kent State University Trumbull Campus and the Youngstown State University Foundation each receiving $49,603. The money is to be used for scholarships for needy Trumbull County residents, Mahoney said.
