Wrong Crime Stoppers
YOUNGSTOWN -- An incorrect Crime Stoppers was issued by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department and published Wednesday in The Vindicator.
The information provided by the sheriff's department described a warrant for David W. Blasens and sought the public's help in his apprehension. Blasens has been in the county jail since June 16, said Maj. Michael Budd.
City hall's air goes out
Struthers City officials felt the heat after their air conditioning went out in city hall around noon Wednesday. They compensated by running fans, opening windows, closing the shades and propping security doors open.
Swamped repairmen couldn't fit the building into their schedule until this morning and expected repairs to take about three hours.
Annual camp for kids
VIENNA -- The 910th Airlift Wing's 4th annual Joint Services Youth Camp for children 9-17 years of age will be this weekend at the Youngstown Air Force Reserve Station. In the past, the event was limited to children of base employees, about 90 of whom participated last year. Because of increased support, it was opened to the public to nominate children to attend, said Technical Sgt. Ron Mines, youth camp coordinator.
Mines, a member of the 910th Security Forces Squadron, said planned activities include physical fitness classes, competitions in sports-type activities, military displays and training demonstrations, camouflage and night vision training, first aid and flag etiquette. The event will conclude at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with a cookout and awards presentation ceremony.
Extreme sports show
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Mall will have an extreme sports show from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. A number of vendors of sporting equipment and recreational vehicles will have displays for the show, which will run at the same time as the Shenango Valley YMCA 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in the mall parking lot.
Woman reports theft
AUSTINTOWN -- An 84-year-old woman told police that between 5 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Monday someone stole two canes and a handicap placard from her car. The 1984 Chrysler was parked in a carport at her South Raccoon Road apartment.
Trustees will meet
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township trustees will meet at 6 p.m. today in the township meeting room in the South Range Plaza, to discuss road improvement projects.
School clothes stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- A pregnant woman in her 20s was seen Wednesday evening taking three navy blue school pants, three white school shirts and a package of socks from The Dollar General store at 3613 Market St. The woman stuffed the items into her purse, left the hangers on the floor and walked out. She was not confronted by a store employee, but an employee wrote down the woman's license plate number for police.
2 rob woman of cash
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 75-year-old East Lucius Avenue woman was robbed of a large amount of cash Wednesday evening by one of two young women who came to do yardwork. While the homeowner was talking to one of the suspects, another pried open the back screen door and went into a closet, where she took cash from two purses, reports show.
Police probe case
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating the possible attempted abduction of a 9-year-old Moorefield Road girl. The child was in the courtyard outside her home at Fountain Square apartments on New Road between 6:30 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, when an ex-boyfriend of her mother's tried to grab her, possibly with the intent to abduct her, police said.
A neighbor who witnessed the event called the child and her mother into his apartment while he contacted a police officer working off duty at the complex. The suspect then fled the scene.
