Chairman appointed
McDONALD -- Mayor James W. Border appointed former Mayor Thomas Leskovac chairman of the village audit committee, an independent citizens group appointed by Border to oversee finances.
Leskovac, whose appointment was approved by council, replaces Stacy Foster, who resigned in July. Foster is a daughter of Councilman Thomas J. Hannon, also a former mayor.
Girard Farmers Market
GIRARD -- The annual Girard Farmers Market, sponsored by the Greater Girard Area Chamber of Commerce, will be from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through Oct. 6 in front of the old Wellman Theater, 29 W. Liberty St.
If the market has been canceled a sign will be posted.
Plans are to continue the market for 10 weeks so pumpkins can be sold in the fall.
The chamber previously announced the market would run only through August.
Property permits issued
SOUTHINGTON -- Zoning Inspector Sam Lee told township trustees Wednesday that he issued permits in July for nine property improvement projects. Among the jobs are house additions, a garage, a deck and three pole barns.
Lee noted that he had collected $1,029 for 35 permits this year for work valued at $1,493,850. He also issued warnings for three violations.
Trustees announced they now own two mowers, an F-525 and a Z-Track. Because the Z-Track is much faster, they approved trading in the F-525 for another Z-Track.
The cost of the new one would be $9,489, trustees said, but after discount and trade-in, the township's cost is $4,300.
Tractors on display
JOHNSTON -- More than 150 antique tractors will be on display at the Trumbull County Antique Steam and Power Association's seventh annual show Saturday and Sunday in the township park.
The show will include four or five working steam engines. All are required to pass a state inspection before running at the show, said Richard Kemmer Sr., association president.
There will be a flea market from noon to 4 p.m. both days, and there will be a classic and antique car show Sunday.
Other events include an antique tractor pull at 1 p.m. Saturday and live music and a church service at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Extreme sports show
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Mall will have an extreme sports show from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
A number of vendors of sporting equipment and recreational vehicles will have displays.
Youth camp at air base
VIENNA -- The 910th Airlift Wing's 4th annual Joint Services Youth Camp for children 9-17 years of age will be Friday night through Sunday at the Youngstown Air Force Reserve Station.
In the past, the event was limited to children of base employees, about 90 of whom participated last year. Because of increased support, it was opened to the public to nominate children to attend, said Technical Sgt. Ron Mines, youth camp coordinator.
Mines, a member of the 910th Security Forces Squadron, said planned activities include physical fitness classes, competitions in sports-type activities, military displays and training demonstrations, camouflage and night vision training, first aid and flag etiquette.
The event will conclude at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with a cookout and awards presentation ceremony.
Contract awarded
WARREN -- Osteopath Phillip P. Malvasi has been awarded a $250,000 contract to provide medical services to inmates in Trumbull County Jail.
Dr. Malvasi, of Niles, has been providing the service on a month-to-month basis since June, when the county's contract with Dr. Sharon I. George of Warren expired.
Two companies offered services for less money than Malvasi, including a Warren company which said it would do the job for $192,000 a year, but county Commissioner Michael O'Brien said commissioners based their choice on the range of services.
