4 injured in horse and buggy crash

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said they don't know what caused a horse to bolt, throwing four passengers out of a buggy it was pulling along Donation Road in Otter Creek Township.
Police said the buggy was northbound around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday when something frightened the horse and the animal veered across the road and ran into a deep ditch.
The open buggy overturned, throwing two Amish couples to the ground.
Miriam M. Troyer, 25, of St. Johns Road, Fredonia, was the most seriously injured. Police said she suffered a broken right leg. She was in serious condition today in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Her husband, Jonathan J., 25, had an injured shoulder but declined treatment.
The buggy driver, Simon J. Schmucker, 31, and his wife, Mary Ann Schmucker, 28, also of St. Johns Road, were treated at UPMC Horizon in Greenville for minor injuries.
Police didn't say if the horse was injured.
