3 injured in accident
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- Three people were injured in an accident on U.S. Route 224 in Mahoning Township. Pennsylvania State Police said Marcus E. Russell, 16, of Leslie Drive, Edinburg, was turning left onto U.S. Route 224 from Carbon Micco Road when he pulled into the path of a westbound car driven by Karen L. Majeski, 55, of RD 1, Ellwood City, at 3:45 p.m. Saturday. Majeski tried to veer to the side the road, but hit the side of Russell's car, police said. Russell's car rolled onto its left side and spun 180 degrees before stopping, they said.
Russell had rib and head injuries and Majeski complained of chest pain. Both were treated at Jameson Hospital, New Castle. Majeski's passenger, Marilyn E. Moore of Conrad St., New Castle, was admitted to the hospital with chest and back pain and was in stable condition this morning.
Drug charges
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said an Austintown man who appeared to be intoxicated was charged with drug possession after officers found suspected crack cocaine in his possession on East State Street at the Shenango River around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Michael A. Howard, 33, of Bryant Drive was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and public drunkenness, and is lodged in the Shenango Valley Regional Lock-Up in Farrell to await arraignment. While there, he tried to hang himself in a jail cell, using his shirt as a noose, police said.
Police said they had to spray him with chemical Mace to subdue him and took him to UPMC Horizon for treatment. Police said he became unruly at the hospital and was charged with disorderly conduct.
He was arraigned before District Justice Ruth French on all charges and remained in Mercer County Jail today on $5,000 bond.
Police investigate thefts
SHARON, Pa. -- Police are investigating two residential burglaries reported over the weekend.
A woman living in the 200 block of Sherman Avenue told police she came home about 9 p.m. Saturday and went to sleep. She awoke four hours later to discover that her engagement ring had been taken off her finger and a sterling silver necklace had been removed from her neck. Two charms on a chain in the same room were also missing, she said. Police said entry to her home was gained by removing a window air conditioning unit.
In another crime, a man moving into an apartment in the 600 block of South Irvine Avenue told police he dropped off some of his possessions at the new residence Friday and noted that the previous tenant's possessions were still in the apartment. He came back Sunday and the previous tenant's possessions were gone, and so were his VCR and Sony PlayStation, he told police.
71-year-old man charged
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 71-year-old man faces charges of criminal trespass, defiant trespass, terroristic threats and harassment after being accused of threatening a woman with a knife and a cane. Police said George Parker of Locust Street let himself into the 45-year-old woman's unlocked apartment in Skyview Towers on North Beaver Street when she was in the shower at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Police said the woman told Parker to leave and he became upset and pulled out a knife and threatened to kill her. He then started waiving his cane around and threatened to break her television set and other things in the apartment, police said. Parker pulled out the telephone cord from the wall and the woman ran to another apartment and called police.
Crash investigation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating a driver who crashed into their substation in Boardman, and then fled down Market Street before the chase ended at Wick and Lincoln avenues about 7 a.m. today.
Police said the male motorist would be taken for medical treatment after complaining of chest pains.
Fire damages home
YOUNGSTOWN -- Firefighters think a wiring fault caused a fire at 3:09 a.m. today that caused $15,000 in damage to the home of John Vivo at 724 E. Boston Ave. Vivo was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment for heightened blood pressure.
Firefighters aren't sure of the cause of a blaze that caused $9,000 in damage to the garage of Janet Almasy at 2340 Ridgelawn Ave. at 10:53 p.m. Saturday.
