Marrow runs awayfrom golf field
NORTH JACKSON -- Tim Marrow, competing in the 14-15-year-old division, took first place as he shot a 4-under par 66 Saturday in the Meander Junior Golf Tournament.
A field of nine boys participated in the event. He was 10 strokes better than the second-place finisher.
It was the low round of the day as 45 boys and girls participated in the event.
Nick Fainato won the 12-13 bracket with a score of 40 for nine holes. Ricky Segesto won the 10-11 division with 39. Nick Creatore (8-9) shot 37 to win the six-hole tournament.
In the 16-18 bracket, Jay Grimes took first place as he fired 71.
Adrian Catalano won the girls 16-18 division with a score of 98. Brei Miller carded 40 in the girls 12-13 event.
Canfield teamin state tournament
TALLMADGE -- After losing the first Little League district tournament game to Campbell, Canfield's 9-10-year-old all stars won eight straight to advance through the losers bracket to the state tournament today.
The Canfield stars go against Tallmadge in the Little League state tournament at 8 p.m.
The defense allowed only 13 runs, six of them earned. Jared Turocy, Steven Hunt and Jake Kucek anchor the pitching staff.
Billy Cupplers had four RBIs to lead the way in the losers championship game.
In the District II championship game, the All-Stars won 4-0. Kucek went the distance, giving up only one hit and he struck out nine while facing just 21 batters.
Turocy will be the starting pitcher for Canfield today against Tallmadge (9-1).
All-stars fall shortin regional event
MATTOON, Ill. -- The 15-year-old Youngstown All-Star team was handed a 5-4 setback in the Ohio Valley Babe Ruth Regional Baseball Tournament.
Adam Boris led Youngstown with two hits and three RBIs.
Jeremy Hartman and Adam Zakowski combined to scatter seven hits in a losing cause.
14-year-oldsbow out 6-1
EAU-CLAIRE, Wis. -- The tournament trail came to an end for the Youngstown Babe Ruth 14-year-old All Stars as they dropped a 6-1 decision to Owensboro, Ky. Saturday in the Ohio Valley Regional event.
Grant Sevek and Andy Todor had two hits apiece for the all stars who finished the tournament 0-2.
Bowling clinicat Camelot Lanes
BOARDMAN -- Local PBA pros are stepping up to coach bowlers in a preseason clinic at Camelot Lanes.
Marla Chicase and Rob Vukovich kick off Camelot Bowl Camp 2001 on Aug. 15. Sessions are also slated Aug. 21-23 and Aug. 25-26.
Rich Williams, a Junior Olympic national trainer, YABA Master Instructor, Silver Level USA Bowling coach and Bowlers Ed Clinic staff member, will oversee the final two days.
Originally designed for the high school bowling team, but open to any bowler over 12, Bowl Camp is ideal for any bowling instructor, parent volunteer, team coach or competitive bowler. The program provides on-lane and classroom instruction over six sessions for a $50 fee.
The camp addresses concentration, pre-shot preparation and the science of lane conditions, oil patterns and bowler's style.
Chicase is the top female bowler in Youngstown. She has won two regional titles and has carried the highest WIBC average (220) for five years.
Camelot's Smithhonored in Vegas
BOARDMAN -- Camelot Lanes co-proprietor Peppe Smith was a Special Awards project recipient at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas recently when the Bowling Proprietors Association of America met to recognize industry leaders for 2001.
Smith led a team of Ohio proprietors in the creation of 14 conferences with 110 schools that involved 3,000 teen bowlers in a single year. She also chaired the High School Bowling USA strategic planning task force to push the movement in other states.
The BPAA noted that her time on the road as a spokesperson and cheerleader for high school bowling involved over 60 meetings with athletic directors..
Bishop getshead coaching job
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Michael Bishop, a graduate of Fitch High and Youngstown State University, has been named varsity football coach for Courtland High.
Bishop was an assistant coach the past three years while overseeing the team for the former head coach, who was on sick leave.
Courtland had a winning record last season for the first time in several years and participated in the Virginia playoffs.
Bishop credits the powerful influence of former Fitch coaches Richard Denamen and Dave Hartman on his athletic career.
Hockey gamebenefits society
TRANSFER, Pa. -- There will be an all-star hockey game Aug. 16 on Route 18, next to the Reynolds Drive Inn.
Face-off is set for 9 p.m. Proceeds from the game, which is sponsored by Tri-County Deck Sports and Venom Hockey, will benefit the American Cancer Society, Northwest Region/Mercer Unit.
Football leaguewelcomes additions
COLUMBIANA -- Lowellville and Springfield will compete in the Mahoning Valley Junior Football League this season.
The sixth-grade league, in its third year, also includes Columbiana, Crestview, Jackson-Milton, Leetonia, Sebring and Western Reserve.
Each team will play seven games, with the season set to start Aug. 25.
Brookfield, S. Rangeselling tickets
BROOKFIELD -- Brookfield High season tickets for five home football games, $20 for adults and $10 for students, go on sale at the school Aug. 13.
Eight volleyball home games will cost $25 for adults and $10 for students.
A fall sports pass is $30 for adults and $15 for students.
At South Range High, football and volleyball season passes go on sale at the school Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Pavlik wins by TKOin second round
LAS VEGAS -- Kelly Pavlik of Youngstown remained undefeated as a professional boxer by disposing of Mario Lopez of Mexico in a second-round TKO Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Pavlik (10-0), a Lowellville High graduate, floored Lopez in the first round of their 154-pound match-up with a short right hand. Then Pavlik finished matters in the second round at 1:45 with a left hook. Lopez fell to 3-2-1.
