JAMES A. MAPES, 70 Was teacher, coach at Howland High
HUBBARD -- Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home for James A. Mapes, 70, of 1420 Mahonia Court, Raleigh, N.C., formerly of 6315 Laurel Park, Hubbard, who died Wednesday at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Mapes was born Jan. 12, 1931, in Warren, a son of James W. and Mary H. Futchko Mapes.
He had been a teacher and coach at Howland High School. He graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor's degree in education and received his master's degree in education from Westminster College in New Wilmington.
He was a member of Grace Community Church in Raleigh, Raleigh Newcomers Club and the Sparkle Golf League where he had been secretary-treasurer. He also was a member of Hubbard Golf Club.
In 1953 and 1954, he played professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians. He was assistant coach in basketball and football at Hubbard High School and was head track coach there from 1956 to 1961. He was head basketball and baseball coach at Howland High School from 1962 to 1974, and from 1965 to 1981, he was a Trumbull County Basketball Referee Association member, having served as president in 1971 and 1972. In 1972, he was named Trumbull County Coach of the Year. He was a life member of the Trumbull County Coaches Association and served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
Besides his wife, the former Ruth P. Lanz, whom he married June 5, 1954, he leaves a son, Dr. James L. of Hubbard; two daughters, Lorie L. Stahl and Tamara L. Skinner, both of Raleigh; a sister, Barbara L. Leslie of Boardman; and four grandchildren.
Friends may call from noon until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
