WARREN -- The Trumbull County Jail is closed to all convicted nonviolent offenders, Sheriff Thomas Altiere said. He said there are 316 prisoners in the facility. He said people who are sentenced to jail for theft, forgery or other nonviolent crimes will be scheduled to serve their time in the near future, but he didn't know when. He noted that if someone is arrested on a violent crime, such as domestic violence, robbery, felonious assault or murder, the jail has room to hold them.
Drug task force nets14 drug-charge arrests
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Drug Task Force has arrested 13 adults and one juvenile on various drug charges. The adults will be arraigned in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court later this afternoon. The juvenile will be arraigned later this week in Trumbull County Juvenile Court, officials said. The arrests, which took place Tuesday, followed an eight-month investigation, task force officials said. Reports state that those arrested are accused of selling various drugs, including cocaine, crack cocaine, OxyContin and marijuana.
Discussing mercury
WEATHERSFIELD -- The Defense National Stockpile Center will have a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at McMenamy's banquet center in Niles to discuss what to do with mercury stored at the Weathersfield depot. The depot houses about 621 tons of mercury, officials said. The meeting is free and open to the public. Clerk receives honor
WARREN -- City council Clerk Darla K. Neugebauer has received designation as a certified municipal clerk from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, San Dimas, Calif. The honor was given to Neugebauer for achieving high educational, service and experience requirements. She served as deputy council clerk from May 1992 to January 1998, when she was appointed clerk. She recently completed in-depth courses in managerial and leadership skills and technical training while enrolled in Kent State University's public administration program. Neugebauer joins 109 active municipal clerks in Ohio who have also received the designation.
Candlelight vigil set
YOUNGSTOWN -- A candlelight vigil in recognition of National Crime Victims' Rights Week will be at noon April 27 in the Mahoning County Courthouse rotunda. The annual event is sponsored by the county prosecutor's office and the Help Hotline Crisis Center.
Extinguisher to visit
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Extinguisher, the American Medical Association's superhero dedicated to educating children about the dangers of tobacco, will visit Shenango Valley Mall from 2 to 2:45 p.m. Saturday. The Extinguisher, a costumed character, will appear at the mall's annual Kids' Fest program in front of the J.C. Penney store in the main concourse. The 20-minute interactive Extinguisher program is geared for children between the ages of 6 and 10. His appearance is sponsored by the Mercer County Medical Society Alliance.
