MAHONING COUNTY Grand jury indicts Pa. man

Friday, April 13, 2001

A New Castle, Pa., man accused of beating his ex-girlfriend and leaving her face down in a swamp in Lawrence County is facing new, unrelated charges in Mahoning County.
A Mahoning County grand jury indicted Corey James Kradel, 23, of Beckford Street on Thursday on one count each of deception to obtain dangerous drugs and illegal processing of court documents.
Court documents say Kradel passed a fake prescription for the painkiller Oxycontin sometime Feb. 5 in Mahoning County. He will be arraigned sometime in the next two weeks.
Bound over: Also Thursday, Kradel was bound over for trial in Pennsylvania on unrelated charges involving his ex-girlfriend.
Police said Kradel was waiting in the parking lot of Cascade Galleria downtown New Castle on April 5 when his ex-girlfriend left work at 4:40 p.m. Authorities say Kradel pulled the 19-year-old woman into the car and drove her to an abandoned quarry.
The woman told police that Kradel pulled her out of the car, beat her on the head and bit her hand to force money out of it.
As she was lying unresponsive on the ground, Kradel dragged her to a nearby swamp, placed her face down in the water and drove away in her car, police said.
He later returned the car to the Cascade Galleria parking lot.
District Justice David Rishel ordered Kradel to stand trial on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, kidnapping, car theft, robbery and terrorist threats. He remains in jail on $100,000 bond.
The woman was treated at St. Francis Hospital.
