PREP SOFTBALL Poland, Fitch, Boardman aces throw one-hitters in victories



Struthers and Southington also were winners.
POLAND -- Sara Knill (4-0) and Jessie Lamport combined to pitch a one-hitter and strike out 14 as Poland High's softball team shut out Salem 13-0 Tuesday in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
The Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0 MAC) scored seven runs in the second inning and added five in the fourth.
Kim Whitman got the only hit for Salem (0-5, 0-2) with two out in the fourth inning.
Heidi Kemmel hit a triple and two singles, scored twice and drove in two runs.
Lamport hit a double and single and scored twice, while Katie Naumoff hit a pair of singles.
Fitch 5, Southeast 0: RAVENNA -- Brianna Ozias fired a one-hitter at Southeast (2-6), improving her record to 5-0. The only hit Ozias allowed was a single by Amy Austin in the second inning.
For the Falcons (6-2), catcher Joanna Fergus had two singles.
Boardman 14, Canfield 0: CANFIELD -- Boardman scored 12 runs in the first two innings as senior Marissa Bartholomew tossed a one-hit shut out.
Bartholomew (6-1) struck out six and had no walks, giving up the lone hit to freshman Nikki Garrett in the third inning. Bartholomew also had three hits and drove in two runs, while Mary McCabe and Jennifer Feret also had three hits.
Laura Amero, Jennifer Pancake, Gina Rango and Jaclyn Corroto all had two hits for the Spartans (8-1), with Pancake, Amero and Rango also driving in two runs each.
Boardman had 19 hits.
Struthers 4, South Range 2: STRUTHERS -- The Wildcats (5-1) got the three deciding runs in the second inning.
Loriel Singer (2-0) was the winning pitcher. She also hit a double and single to pace Struthers.
Losing pitcher Jenn Toth (4-3), who allowed only four hits, hit a pair of singles for South Range.
Southington 3, Mathews 2: SOUTHINGTON -- Sophomore Brittney Campana (2-0) scattered four hits and struck out 15 to pick up the win.
The Wildcats (5-1) got the deciding run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Becca Derr singled, moved to second on a fielder's choice, then with two away, scored on a single by Stephanie Hudak.
Hudak and Derr each had two hits.
Jackson-Milton 8, Warren JFK 1: WARREN -- Jackson-Milton (3-6) put the game out of reach with a six-run rally in the fourth inning.
Corey Velk (3-5) scattered three hits and struck out six to pick up the win.
Theresa Yeager hit two doubles, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Blue Jays. Niki James had two singles.
Courtney Reppy hit a double and single for JFK.
Girard 7, Campbell 6: GIRARD -- Amanda Brewer lined a double to left-center in the bottom of the seventh inning to drive home Trish Cristopher for the game-winning run.
Jen Melfi struck out eight, walked two and gave up seven hits to get the victory. Melfi also doubled for Girard (3-4). .
Ursuline 11, Brookfield 3: BROOKFIELD -- Dorothy Delboccio had three singles and Kelly Barry and Shawn Iman had two hits apiece for the Irish.
Barry and Iman both tripled for Ursuline (2-4) while Iman also doubled.
Erin Zubal got the win for Ursuline, improving her record to 2-3. Kalli McMullin took the loss.
