AUCTIONS

Cleveland School of Hearing and Speech will sponsor a quarter auction at 7 p.m. May 5 at the Austintown Aerie Eagles 3298, 1655 S. Raccoon Road. Admission is $5 at the door. Proceeds will benefit Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center, who services clients in 14 counties of Northeastern Ohio, regardless of the ability to pay. Doors open at 6:30. Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, 7440 South Ave., Boardman. The silent auction will begin at 5, dinner at 6 and live auction after dinner with George Roman as auctioneer. Items feature gift baskets, Ohio State University football tickets and more. St. Joseph the Provider School, Youngstown, will sponsor its annual basket and gift auction with a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. April 26 at St. Patrick Church, 357 N. Main St., Hubbard, in the church hall. Doors open at 5:30 and menu includes chicken francaise, eggplant rollatine, roast beef, red parsley potatoes, mixed vegetables, salad, bread, dessert, coffee and tea. Donations of $25 are requested. BINGO

Holy Apostles Parish, 854 Wilson Ave., Youngstown, will host a Spring Fling Bingo and Card Party at 2 p.m. April 28 in the social hall. The event is sponsored by the church’s Altar and Rosary Society. Donation is $5 and includes lunch and door prizes. Tickets can be purchased after Mass each week and at the door. There will be special raffles and a 50-50 drawing.

St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Road, Youngstown, will host a designer purse bingo May 19. Tickets are $35 at the door and include all rounds of bingo and one dauber. FESTIVALS

Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host its 13th annual “Plant the Seed to Read” Children’s Book Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks. The event, “Reading’s My Superpower,” will host authors, illustrators, storytellers, readers, giveaways and more. The event is free and open to the community.

FUNDRAISERS

Austintown Fitch High School’s wrestling team will host a quarter ticket raffle Thursday at the Youngstown Saxon Club, 710 Meridian Road. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the raffle starts at 6. Raffle tickets, which will be sold by the sheet, will cost approximately one quarter each. There will be more than 80 prizes, gift baskets and door prizes. Food will be for sale by the Saxon Club. Girard Multi-Generational Center’s annual fundraiser “Cars are the Stars 5” will include two special raffles this year. Winners will be announced the day of the show, June 1 (rain date, June 8). Tickets are $6 for each raffle and must be purchased by May 17. Tickets will be $8 at the door. Registration the day of the show will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the show will be from 1 to 3. The first raffle is for a flat screen TV (sponsored by Rep. Glenn W. Salem Federation of Women’s Clubs will host a spring luncheon at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 436 E. Second St., Salem, in the fellowship hall. Guest speaker will be Sue Thomas who will speak about her years with the FBI and her charity, Silent Night, which collects coats for the homeless. Thomas has been deaf since childhood and became an expert in lip reading and did undercover surveillance for the FBI. Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, Canfield, has nearly new clothes for the entire family. Inventory clearance continues in April. Items will be $1 each, except jewelry, shoes, purses, prom and party dresses. Light purple tickets will showcase the cost of each item. Store hours are from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesdays. The store will be closed April 30 due to setting up for the garage sale to take place May 3 and 4.

Poland Lions Club will host its annual Treasures of the Trunk sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8 at Poland High School, 3199 Dobbins Road, in the stadium parking lot. Vendors are needed; limit of 100 spaces available. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage-sale items are welcome. Niles Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will host its 17th annual Spring Extravaganza Style and Creativity Show from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. May 4 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. In addition to the show, there will be a judged denim recycling sewing challenge for members. Cost is $24 for members and $27 for nonmembers and includes a full course lunch. Youngstown Model Railroad Association will sponsor its annual spring Model Railroad and Toy Train Flea Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Salem Center Plex, 1098 Ellsworth Ave. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. Free parking is available at the Center Plex, the Community Center and the municipal parking lot for Waterworth Park. The trolley also will be available for transport. In addition to a wide variety of model trains, there will be vendors offering train parts, railroad books, video CDs, photographs and railroad memorabilia.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Legacy Dog Rescue and F5RS – Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies, & Feathered Friends will host its Picture with a Rescue Bunny event at Family Video, 4385 Kirk Road, Austintown, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $8 to have a picture taken with a therapy bunny or two and the 4x6 photo will be printed to take home. LIVE New Wilmington will sponsor The Tour de Donut, a bike ride that will take place June 8. Riders will depart from Memorial Field House at Westminster College. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and cost is $20 per rider, which includes a limited edition T-shirt. Various routes will include 10 miles, two 30-mile choices, and a hill challenge. Those who eat a full dozen doughnuts throughout their ride will win a hand-crafted doughnut medallion. Those 12 and under will only need to eat a half dozen. Last year, Apple Castle made 2,459 doughnuts. An average of 300 doughnuts were consumed every hour throughout the day. Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice Senior Center will host an “Eggstra” Special Good Friday Living Well from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 19. Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road, will host an Easter Alive children’s program at 11 a.m. Saturday. There will be two live miniature donkeys in a petting area and a puppet skit starring “Humble” the donkey and “Gerbert.” A raffle will take place, and there will be games, crafts and snacks for the children. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee will sponsor a Spring Get-A-Way bus trip to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. Cost is $30 per person with a $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. (There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks.) The bus will leave Fab Limo, 3681 Connecticut Ave., Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave the casino at 5 p.m. Deadline for reservations is May 9. Trumbull County Travel Club will sponsor a motor coach mini vacation to Holland, Mich., from May 7 to 9. Holland, located on Lake Macatawa, plants millions of blooming tulips which will greet members in this town named the “Best Small Town Festival” in the USA. Reflecting on the area’s Dutch heritage, Windmill Island is on the agenda as well as the DeKlomp Wooden Shoe & Delft Factory tour. There will be time to experience traditional Klompen, photograph the Big Red Lighthouse and sit in comfortable seats for the Volksparade. Two breakfasts and two dinners are included along with the Fiddle Fire Show and the Dazzle Dinner Theater. The club is open to any person who wishes to travel and make new friends. There are no fees to join. The club has been together since 2000 and consists of people over 21. Members meet twice a year at area sites to discuss upcoming trips. All trips leave from one site and use motor coaches, trains, air and will sometimes incorporate cruising.
