Outstanding women of the Mahoning Valley received honors at the May 15 meeting of the Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs, which took place at Shepherd of the Valley, 301 W. Western Reserve Road.

Youngstown State University nursing student Beth Earles received a scholarship. She plans to earn a doctorate in nursing and to practice and teach nursing.

Also recognized for educational excellence was Sister Jerome Corcoran. Sister Jerome founded the Youngstown Community School and is director of Sister Jerome’s Poor, a local ministry.

Barb Shaffer, society and features editor at The Vindicator, received the club’s media award for her dedication in announcing community events. Shaffer has been employed by The Vindicator for 40 years.

The YAFWC Woman of the Year award went to Lee Bowden for her 30 years of membership and club service as an officer and committee member.

The awards portion of the meeting concluded with the presentation of gold pins to 50-year members Dorothy Schwers, Judy Robinson, and Ann Hill and her sister Kathleen Rickert.

Sean Baran entertained the group with piano selections.

The club has enriched the community for 106 years, emphasizing continuing education and educational leadership.
