Salem senior Anthony Shivers began his quest for a second straight state championship in a big way on Thursday, breaking his own meet record in the discus with a throw of 196 feet, 3 inches at the Division II district track and field meet at Reilly Stadium.

Shivers, who set the previous record (188-6) at last year’s district meet, won the event by more than 30 feet over West Branch’s Connor Sharp (165-9). Salem junior Elijah Bricker was fourth. The top four in each final advance to next week’s regional meet.

On the girls side, Salem senior Ciera Trybend won the shot put with a toss of 40-2 1/2 while West Branch’s Lea Bock was fourth (34-6).

Salem’s 4x800 relay placed second. Team members are sophomore Anna Shivers, senior Mallory Maher, freshman Olivia Stiff and senior Katherine Stiff.

Poland senior Taylor Ashton placed second in the high jump at 5 feet and the Bulldogs’ 4x800 relay of seniors Libby Rogenski and McKinsie, Michelle and Melissa Klim placed fourth.
