Canfield’s Brode sets Harvard record

BOSTON

Canfield High graduate Dustin Brode broke Harvard’s shot put record with a throw of 18.20 meters at the outdoor Heptagonal Ivy League Championship. The record was set in 1969 by Dick Benka.

At the team banquet, Brode was elected team captain and received the “Beyond the Call of Duty” award for being the only athlete to compete in three events and the Little Shot Put Award.

Brode is ranked 14th in the shot put in the East Region heading into the Regional meet in Greensboro, N.C.

Brookfield’s Harkulich to attend Mount Union

BROOKFIELD

Brookfield High senior Collin Harkulich will attend the University of Mount Union College to continue his football career this fall.

Last fall, Harkulich helped lead the Warriors to a undefeated 10-0 regular season for the first time since 1978 and a 12-win season, a new school record.

Harkulich finished the season with 26 receptions for 452 yards and eight touchdowns as a receiver. On defense, he led Trumbull County with eight interceptions as a defensive back.

He received All NEO District first team, All-Trumbull County first team and All State special mention honors. He plans to study sports business or criminal justice.

Steelers’ Bell ready to run

PITTSBURGH

Le’Veon Bell wants the ball in his hands. Always.

First down. Fourth down. First quarter or overtime. The Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back figures the best chance for his team to be successful is with the ball tucked under his right arm and his legs churning upfield.

“I just want to win,” Bell said. “I can do a lot of things. I’m a smart player so I can pick up things quick. I don’t have many weaknesses and a lot of strengths.”

The second-round draft pick will get a chance to showcase them this fall after Pittsburgh selected him with the 48th overall pick in last month’s draft, drawn by Bell’s versatility and unusual size. Listed at 245 pounds during his career at Michigan State, the most startling thing about Bell — who has shed 15 pounds in the last five months — is his height.

At 6-foot-2, he looks like a wide receiver.

Manchester City defeats Chelsea

ST. LOUIS

Micah Richards re-directed a header in extra time and Manchester City overcame a three-goal deficit to beat rival Chelsea 4-3 on Thursday night in the opener of a two-game U.S. tour.

Edin Dzeko’s second goal of the game tied it in the 85th minute for Man City, which was 3-0-1 against Chelsea in the regular season.

The tour that finishes at Yankee Stadium in New York on Saturday comes on the heels of the just-completed English Premier League season and was predictably a polite affair in front of an enthusiastic neutral standing-room crowd of 48,263 at Busch Stadium. Ticket sellers on StubHub sought triple-digit payoffs up to $300 not long before game-time.

Juan Mata set up a pair of first-half goals for Chelsea before coming out.

Zendejas indicted

TUCSON, Ariz.

Former NFL and University of Arizona kicker Max Zendejas has been indicted on damage and theft charges in connection with his recently closed Tucson restaurant.

Pima County authorities say the indictment claims Zendejas “recklessly defaced or damaged property” belonging to the university causing more than $10,000 in damages at the restaurant.

The Arizona Daily Star says the property includes a walk-in refrigerator, compressors, ceiling fans and kitchen sinks.

Zendejas opened the Mexican restaurant and bar across the street from Arizona Stadium in 2010.

The 49-year-old Zendejas set several scoring records with the Wildcats from 1982-85.
