COLUMBUS

Maurice Clarett will play for the Columbus affiliate of Tiger Rugby, the rugby developmental program for selecting the team that will represent the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the Columbus Dispatch reported on Friday.

The Ohio Rugby Sevens Invitational will take place in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, on May 25.

Clarett played football at Warren Harding High.

Clarett spent one season at Ohio State, rushing for 1,237 yards while scoring 18 touchdowns in helping the Buckeyes win the 2002 BCS National Championship.

Clarett served 3 Ω years in prison on robbery and concealed weapons charges.

YSU baseball team falls to Valparaiso, 7-4

Valparaiso scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning and scored twice in the bottom of the eighth after Youngstown State cut the margin to one in a 7-4 baseball victory over the Penguins on Friday.

Valparaiso starter Chris DeBoo retired the first nine Penguins he faced, but Mike Accardi got the YSU offense going to start the fourth.

The Crusaders got another two-out run in the seventh to go up 5-2 on Andy Burns’ single.

Hutton sisters to perform with stars

Rylee Hutton, 7, and her sister, Kelly, 10, of Salem, will skate at the Skate Dance Dream show in Cleveland on Sunday at 7 p.m.

The show will be held at the Serpentine Arena in Lakewood.

Rylee is in first grade at Buckeye School and Kelly is in fourth grade at Reilly School in Salem.

Prizant to state

pittsburgh

Maxwell Prizant of Poland, a junior at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh qualified to compete in the state track meet.

Prizant placed third in the WPIAL track meet at Baldwin High School to advance.

He will be compete in Division AA on May 24 in Shippensburg.

Currently he is ranked sixth in the state in pole vault.

Kent tops Akron 4-3 to take Wagon Wheel

AKRON

Tyler Skulina led the way on the mound to a 4-3 baseball victory for Kent State (33-21, 19-7), beating Akron (15-36, 10-15) not just in the game, but in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge between the two schools.

With the series win, the Golden Flashes beat the Zips eight to seven in the 15 sport head-to-head competition.

Kent State is now undefeated in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge in its two year existence.

Skulina went eight innings in the start, registering a career-high 11 strikeouts.

He allowed three runs in the fourth inning (two earned), but only allowed four hits and one walk in the outing.

Atletico wins Copa del Rey as Ronaldo ejected

Atletico Madrid ended a 25-game, 14-year soccer winless streak against rival Real Madrid, getting a 98th-minute goal from Miranda for a 2-1 victory in the Copa del Rey final following the ejections of Real star Cristiano Ronaldo and coach Jose Mourinho.

Ronaldo put Madrid ahead with a header, his 54th goal of the season, but Atletico tied the score in the 35th minute when Radamel Falcao set up Diego Costa.

Jones stops Lebedev, gets cruiserweight belt

MOSCOW

Guillermo Jones of Panama regained the WBA cruiserweight title in his first fight since 2011, stopping local favorite Denis Lebedev in the 11th round Friday.

Jones, who won the title in 2008 and then retained it twice, inflicted a horrific bruise around the Russian’s right eye before flooring him near the ropes with 56 seconds left in the round.

The Panama fighter improved to 39-3 with two draws and 31 knockouts.
