Former deputy’s condition is upgraded

HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- The condition of a former Mahoning County Sheriff’s Deputy who police earlier said was killed in a shooting has been upgraded to critical condition.

Pennsylvania State Police at New Castle said they were given the wrong information regarding Joseph Lupo, 50, who was injured in a shooting at his Mahoning Township home about 11:20 p.m. Sunday. His wife, Caroline, was injured in the stomach and leg in the same shooting. Joseph Lupo was shot in the head.

They are both being treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Trooper Harry Gustafson said he was given the wrong information that Lupo had died and later found out from the hospital that Lupo was being kept on life support for the purpose of organ donation.

Police had not returned several messages about the case over the past two days.
