Youngstown police probe reported assaults

Youngstown police are investigating two separate domestic assaults, both reported earlier this week.

A 21-year-old city man told police he was involved in an argument with his 26-year-old domestic partner Tuesday morning. That ultimately turned into a knife fight with both men wielding kitchen knives.

The victim told police he and his live-in boyfriend of the last five years began arguing over something shortly after midnight. The verbal argument in the Cedar Lane residence escalated into a fist fight, and his roommate grabbed a kitchen knife and began swinging the weapon at him in a slashing motion.

The victim said he tried to wrestle the knife away from the man and in the process also grabbed a knife to ward off the attack. He told police his arms and throat were cut during the struggle.

The victim told police he went to the front of the house to call 911, but while on the phone with emergency call takers he was hit over the head with an empty gin bottle and assaulted again.

The victim’s boyfriend took the bottle and a knife then fled the house slashing the victim’s car tires as he fled. Police arriving at the scene noticed the suspect running through rear yards, but could not find the man during a search of the area.

The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment of a large cut on his throat, cuts to his forearms and a large gash to the head.

Police are also investigating the reported assault Monday of a 53-year-old city man over the custody of a one-year-old child. The child’s father was at work and the mother is reportedly in police custody.

The victim in this case told police he was baby sitting the child inside his Pointview Avenue home shortly after 6 p.m. Monday when the child’s aunt, who is not related to the victim, came into the home to take the child. He told the woman to leave and followed her out of the house where he noticed a group of about six men standing in the driveway.

The victim, whose arm is in a sling from a previous injury, was pulled from the porch onto the driveway where he was repeatedly punched, kicked in the face and hit on the side of his body.

The assault continued until someone in the house ran to call 911. A witness told police the assailants fled the area in two separate cars — a tan Chevrolet Malibu and a blue Chevrolet Suburban.

The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for evaluation.
