Pa. police probe ex-deputy’s death

HILLSVILLE, Pa.
Mahoning Township Police Chief Jim Morris said he never had any trouble at a house where a former Mahoning County deputy sheriff was shot to death and his wife wounded Sunday night.
Morris said Monday afternoon he did not want to comment much on the investigation into the death of 50-year-old Joseph Lupo and the wounding of his wife, Caroline Lupo, also 50, at their 4812 W. Main St. home.
Investigators from the New Castle barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police are handling the investigation. They released a statement Monday morning that said Joseph Lupo was shot in the head and his wife suffered wounds to her stomach and leg during a domestic dispute about 11:15 p.m. Sunday.
Both were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where Joseph Lupo died from his injuries, according to the release. A nursing supervisor said no information was being released on Caroline Lupo.
Later in the day, investigators said they would not release any more information because Caroline Lupo is not yet ready to speak to detectives.
Morris said he was a personal friend of Joseph Lupo’s. He said his department had never had any trouble with the Lupos, and that they never had any calls there. Joseph Lupo was on his second marriage.
Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene said that he started at the sheriff’s department in 1992 with Joseph Lupo, who quit in 2005. Greene said Lupo spent the majority of his time in the department working courthouse security.
Greene also said he did not have much to say.
“Obviously, from what we know so far, it is very upsetting,” Greene said.
