YSU baseball falls, 8-3

Milwaukee

Milwaukee scored seven runs in the fourth inning to blow open a 1-1 game and beat the Youngstown State baseball team 8-3 on Sunday.

Both teams had nine hits, but the Panthers had five of theirs in their seven-run fourth.

They also benefitted from an error and two hit batsmen in the frame in improving to 14-7 in Horizon League play.

Youngstown State dropped to 8-13.

Drew Dosch singled and scored on Josh White’s two-out double to put the Penguins ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, and Milwaukee tied the score on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

Fitch’s Davis brothers transferring from Pitt

PITTSBURGH

Fitch High graduates Demitrious and Chris Davis are leaving the Pitt football team, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The twins redshirted last season and did not appear on the team’s two-deep chart at the end of spring practice. Although they were recruited as wide receivers, Chris was moved to cornerback and Demetrious to running back.

Greco Roman state

The Green Machine club had three state champions and 11 athletes place at the Ohio Wrestling State Greco Roman Championships.

Vince Mancini, a sophomore at Boardman High, won the 88-pounds Cadet title, seniors Nick Mancini (126) and Joe Cordova (182) both won junior titles.

Other wrestlers who placed include Gabe Stark (Howland, 170, runner up); Adam Green (Fitch Cadet, 138, runner up); Jordan Radich (Howland, 170, third); Anthony Mancini (Poland, Junior, 170, fourth); Zach Mackall (Fitch, junior, 145, fourth); Isaiah Jackson (Fitch, cadet, 160, fifth); Anthony Morucci (Poland, cadet, 126, fifth) and Dante Ginnetti (Poland, 113, sixth).

Mosley is fourth

Freshman Dior Delophont won two events at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships as the Kent State women’s team won its fourth straight team title with 169 points.

Akron finished second with 119, while Buffalo was third with 109.5 in the 12-team field.

In the discus, Kent freshman Danniel Thomas placed second at 172-08 and junior Joh’Vonnie Mosley (McDonald High) finished fourth at 163-05.

Belkov wins 9th Giro stage with solo escape

FLORENCE, Italy

Maxim Belkov of Russia won the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia on Sunday with a superb solo performance, and Vincenzo Nibali retained the overall lead.

Belkov, who rides for Katusha, won in 4 hours, 31 minutes and 31 seconds, beating Carlos Betancur by 44 seconds following a long solo escape on the wet and hilly 170-kilometer (106-mile) ride from San Sepolcro to Florence. Jarlinson Pantano was third, 46 seconds behind Belkov.

The 28-year-old Belkov attacked 31 miles from the finish and maintained his advantage for his first Grand Tour stage victory.

United gives Ferguson winning home farewell

Amid a carnival atmosphere at a rainy Old Trafford, Manchester United gave Alex Ferguson and Paul Scholes a winning sendoff in their final home match.

Rio Ferdinand scored his first Premier League goal in five years, breaking an 86th-minute tie in a 2-1 win over Swansea on Sunday.

The 71-year-old Ferguson said Wednesday he is retiring at the end of the season after nearly 27 years as United manager.

Munoz tops Indy’s speed chart in practice

INDIANAPOLIS

Carlos Munoz shot straight to the top of the Indianapolis 500 speed chart Sunday.

A little more than 24 hours after passing his rookie test, the Colombian narrowly averted a collision with teammate Marco Andretti in the first turn and posted the fastest lap in two practice sessions by going 223.023 mph on a cold, windy day.
